Christian Rock Band Know How Jesus Felt

From The Onion

COLUMBIA, MO—After walking off stage to a chorus of boos, threats, and obscenities, local Christian rock band Enter the Kingdom told reporters Friday that they now knew exactly how Jesus felt when he was persecuted.

"We were always taught that Christ suffered for the sins of man, but it wasn't until our gig at Pat's Tavern that we actually understood what that meant," said lead singer Andrew Walker, who formed the band in 2006 with three friends from his Bible study group.

Four Lions = Dead Good

I went to see Chris Morris' Four Lions last night - it may not be perfect but I highly recommend it. I've been a huge fan of Morris' work since discovering Blue Jam on Radio One one night after May Anne Hobbs' Breezeblock show (perhaps even the one where Primal Scream did a mix), and later getting addicted to The Day Today (still my favourite comedy show ever). People have certain expectations of Morris' work now, as he has become known for a taboo-breaking, deliriously close-to-the-bone satyrical comedy style, and I have read some initial reactions to Four Lions that claim it is lacking in that department. Well, yes, it's not as radical, or no-holds-barred as Brasseye, but then I don't think it needs to be really. The basic premise of people bombing themselves and innocent civilians is dark enough, and even then the film is still uproariously funny.

Like I said above though, it's not perfect. Certain scenes are lacking a coherent context (some of the domestic scenes mainly) which puts them at odds with the rest of the film. Whether this is deliberate or not, I personally would have liked to have known more about the motivations of this motley bunch of bombers, and why exactly they are willing to give up comfortable domesticity for the life of a martyr. However the rest of the film does stand up, with some genuinely hilarious and subversive moments, and it is carried by some excellent performances by the leads.

I think this is a film that will reward multiple viewings, as it really did seem to be a laugh a minute, and there are some choice catchphrases in there too ("Fuck mini Baby Bells!" "Rubber Dinghy Rapids"), but it is also surprisingly touching. We really grow to care about these characters, which is surprising, considering what their aims are. I think a lot of folk might be put off by this, and expect something much more harsh and brutal from Morris. But at the end of the day, it still raised very valid questions in the viewer's mind while raising some deep and dark belly laughs.

Momus - Strawberry Hill

New music from oddball pop wizard Momus, from his upcoming album out sometime this year. This is SUPER lush, another early morning great vibe piece - this deserves a post all of its own. And it features the keyboard skills of a certain Mr Ben Butler...

Early Morning Music

It's very early in the morning, I have a bunch of work to do, and here's some of the music that I am feeling as I do it.

DADDY SCRABBLE Thingy EP (Black Lantern Music)

The latest release on Black Lantern is a bit of a departure, while still remaining in the BLM ballpark. Some very lush jazz horn arrangements rub up against looped and stuttered vocal samples, live drums and fat synth bass, on what seems like mostly live-recorded tracks that have been treated a lot in the post-production. The musicianship is really great on this one, another quality free download from BLM. Early morning jazz baby. Yeah, I must be getting old.

WAVE MACHINES Keep The Lights On (Kid Adrift v Scharkz Mix)

I did a couple of remixes of this tune myself (as did a lot of people I know - none of which got accepted). But right now I am feeling the almost "Requiem For A Dream" orchestration-meets-heavy dubstep vibe of this mix by current hot property Kid Adrift and our mate at the BBC Mr Alim. Nice ending too.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN Country

And just for the sake of it, from one of my favourite albums of last year (mostly due to this tune). They may look weird but this tune is beautiful - like Angelo Badlamienti covering John Barry. The always had a bit of a comedown vibe, so I am glad to report it works just as well when you're getting up as when you're nodding off.

Dom Regan on Frank Frazetta

Good friend of Little Rock Records, Glasgow illustrator Dom Regan has written a short piece about the fantasy illustrator Frank Farzetta, who passed away this day last week.

"Frazetta also stirred a mixture of envy and ambition in me. There was no way I could ever produce something as amazing as his paintings but his work always inspired me to keep trying, to keep fighting to get images out of my imagination and, hopefully to give to people the same sort of feeling that Frazetta managed to inspire in me."

XMRV

For the Edinburgh peeps, one of Glasgow's finest metal / punk / spastic acts XMRV are playing across at Bannermans on Sunday night (that's May 16th). Doors are at 8, and entry's free. For the uninformed, think a more melodic version of Dillinger Escape Plan, or Delta 5 if they'd grown up listening to Black Metal and you're not really very close. Live, they're a frenetic explosion of bass / guitar collision, math-rock drumming and vocals that veer between delicate lilt and throat-shredding scream. We likey.

They've kindly given Shallowrave an exclusive free download of Suicide Slide, from their first self-released EP (available at gigs only). Get it here.

They're currently working on an album, and have gigs in Bloc next month, as well as playing Distorted Picnic this summer. They've toured Europe and played a number of festivals, and we expect big things from them in the near future. Be there.

Ben Butler and Mousepad (Niallist Remixx)

More Ben Butler & Mouse Pad action! (Check Geoff's BB&MP Helsinki gig review below). Cross posted from Niallism.

Just finished off a remix for one of my favourite acts - Ben Butler & Mouse Pad. I have blogged about them before, as I have done a guest vocal on one of their tracks ("Infinite Capacity"), and am hopefully doing more.

The track is called "Future Tent" and I have put a disco spin on it, something akin to a Maurice Fulton production or something on one of the Norwegian house labels like Full Pupp or Smalltown Super Sounds. It's slightly more wonky than that though, and unfortunately when I sped the original up to house tempo some of the synths didn't sound right so I had to edit them. But I find BB&MP's music to be so melodically rich that even keeping 50% of that intact is enough. It's why they are so good and why I like working with them! That and the synth sounds they use.

This remix will be part of an upcoming remix compilation of Ben Butler stuff, and the original of "Future Tent" is out now on 7" on the label dodpop. Here's the remix:

The Worst Festival / Coalition Horror

Two to get your giggle on of a Monday afternoon:

The Worst Festival Ever

"The worst festival I’ve ever been to was Boardmasters in Newquay, which I was forced to review. It was on a beach with a surfing competition running concurrently as a load of inane bands played their depressing noise to tanned men in Hawaiian shirts who’d rather be watching Sublime or high-fiving their reflection in the mirror.
As bad as it was, I am sure I can imagine a festival that’s at least 400,00 times worse than this. Let me now, in my mind, curate the worst festival the world has ever seen. It will feature the following."

Ben Butler and Mousepad Helsinki 08/05

I went to see Ben Butler and Mousepad last night at Myymala2 gallery in Helsinki. Also playing were Samuel Meri and Yön Syke, backed up by DJ Amön Dude.

The space itself is small and homely art gallery with adjoining comic and record store, and proved to be an excellent gig venue: something akin to a living room gig and all the DIY intimacy that encompasses.

Armed only with his voice and an acoustic guitar Samuel Meri provided an engaging opening set. His voice struggled in the higher ranges, but otherwise possessed a soft baritone warmth. His ragged and simple guitar playing betrayed a fairly sophisticated approach to songwriting. My rather basic grasp of Finnish didn't allow great appreciation of his lyrics but my girlfriend Sari assures me that they were beautiful.

Next on the bill, Yön Syke served up some sparse 80's electronica. Rocking an austere vintage Russian electronic drum kit, drummer Jaakko kept the crowd moving (well me at least- I've yet to see a Finn moved enough to dance, even by the almighty Kraftwerk or Grace Jones) with his crisp analog beats, whilst bassist Ukko augmented the rhythm with simple, syncopated lines. Synthesist and vocalist Sami dutifully completed the sparse sound with delay-assisted pads, vocoder and melody lines. They also deserve a medal for the worst, completely un-ironic 7" packaging ever!

Ben Butler and Mousepad played an intricate and energetic set, with Joe's virtuosic synth noodling supported by Bastian's block-rocking, dynamic beats. Supported by some Ableton backing tracks, Joe leapt between three small synths, his glasses strapped firmly to his head (this proved to be a good move - boy that kid can rock a synth). I'm now convinced he's Bernie Worrell's lovechild. Bastian navigated the music's fruity approach to meter and song structure with gusto and fine grimaces. It's always refreshing to hear a band with such an engaging and original voice, and I'm eagerly anticipating their forthcoming EP on Norwegian Skwee label Dødpop and LP on Lo Recordings.

Drake - Forever (MRK 1 Remix)

More free music. Can you handle it?!

This time it's a remix of American R&B/hip-hop rising star Drake, by Manchester's own Mark One of Virus Syndicate. Drake is new to us, but according to his Wikipedia entry, he came to fame as part of the cast of Degrassi: The Next Generation. We weren't lucky enough to catch that show either, but are very pleased to know the Degrassi St flame is still being kept alive by people as talented as Mr. Drake. MRK 1 turns it from (we imagine) slick R&B into heavy dubstep with big stretchy synths and lots of blaring reggae foghorns. Oh, and the tune also features some other MCs you might have heard of.

Cheers to Joe Muggs for the tip off!

New Music Reviews

"Ultimate Breakbeats and shit right? Niggaz still, makin money offa those shits. Loopin the same shits for a thousand years and shit right?" - The RZA as Bobby Digital - B.O.B.B.Y

And with that in mind, sporadic record review time.

Blackmass Plastics - The Spinal Conflict - Black Lantern (out now)
Morphamish's Urge Mode, the third leg of BLM finally kicks off, with a split EP between Blackmass Plastics and his slightly more techy alter ego Crooked One. So for one swift download, you get one remix by each, of the other, and an original tune. Squelch Gate's proving favourite so far - a speedy, but none-too-mental 4/4 banger, offset by dubby percussion and LFO basslines. Hearing a flagged-up "here it comes" in a breakdown should be stupid, but proves awesome, and the crispness of the production indicates how killer it'll sound in a club. The low-end nastiness of Uranium Blues and the shuffling rave-isms of Tek Tek (Crooked One remix) are both well executed too, giving the EP a diverse pallette of the whole bass music spectrum. It's fucking brilliant to see a name like Blackmass, who's put out a wealth of vinyls on the likes of Rag and Bone, acknowledging the power of netlabellism and the CC mindset. We need more like this online.

Gremino - It's Working - Rag and Bone (10 May)
Right. About a month back, I found an old CD called "James Browns' Funky People" - a compilation of those ubiquitous breakbeats that show up in hip-hop, D'n'B, Rave and every genre under the sun. We figured it might be fun to kickstart the old rave phenomenon and add in some 808 kicks, nippy synths and rip off James Brown. Whilst Gremino's new EP is very much in line with Rag and Bone's previous blends of rave / tech / step, he's totally beaten us to the punch, with the title track basically an evolving looped breakbeat that adds to and augments each breakdown. Great for those times when you just need to up the intensity in a mix, but a little staid on it's own. Hyper's one of those tunes everyone will be trying to make in a years time; a forward-thinking juggernaut rumbling with the caged spirit of rave. It's as big and nasty as you'd expect from R&B, but with a mournfully reverbed vocal, and jittery synths that make for a more 6am feel. Problem sounds like very little else I've heard in a while - sculpting echos of rave staples, before splicing in a crazed breakbeat and setting it lose. A bold and unusual record from a producer with all the right creds. Keep an eye on this one.

Rusko - O.M.G - Mad Decent
I'm not going to give this the longest review, simply because it'll receive more press attention than Lindsay Lohan's knickers, but I've given a copy of this a blast, and I feel it worth noting that Rusko's not just the one trick pony capable of chocking out yet another Cockney Thug, Jahova, Hammertime or Pro Nails remix (all of which were pretty sweet). Admittedly, opener Woo Boost is the same overly-polished wubstep he's made his speciality, with sirens, rising synths and occaissonal "woo!"s making this a student-friendly skank-along, while Rub-a-dub Shakedown is cheery popstep that doesn't really go anywhere. However, Kumon Kumon is probably Rusko's best application of his talents to date - a hoover-bass, breakbeat-driven rave monster from when pills were still awesome. Rusko does dumb so well, and on this one, he surpasses even himself. You're on My Mind and I Love You are wub-spliced pop, and if nothing else, I'm glad to see the Andrew WK of bass music doing something different. Worth noting.

Captain Ahab - The End of Irony - deathbombarc.com
Captain Ahab are one of those undescribably brilliant bands who completely defy genre or categorisation - part noisecore, part electro, part spoken-word / hip-hop with a total pop sheen. Abrasive and surreal shit. Acting Hard begins with a looped vocal "backslap you for acting hard", whilst an emo-inflected gregorian choir rumbles into life; as the incessant loops build up, a frenetic synth joins in, and the whole thing explodes into spastic scream-fest. Death to False to Techno blasts in like Gay Against You covering Deathklok - ludicrous, camp noise-making that switches it's focus every 20 seconds, sequeing between hardstyle, breakbeat, minimal, and gangchant vocals. Without being so crass as to say the whole record sounds like this, you'll have made up your mind after these two tracks whether or not you want to hear more.

The closest reference point for The End of Irony would New York's No Wave scene, or possibly modern queercore like Kids on TV; both inhabit that curious Venn diagram where experimentalism and intellectual concepts collide with vicious anarchy and pure atavistic indulgence. Like both of the above, Captain Ahab also write with a great feel for slick pop music. It's still hard listening, and were it not for the slick execution, would be disregarded as nothing but masturbatory drug-fuckery; as it is, The End of Irony is challenging and occasionally frustrating genius.

Morphamish "Urge Mode" EP

Meanwhile, over on Black Lantern Music, the new EP by the super-talented Morphamish has dropped. "The Urge Mode" EP is a must for fans of basslines. And beats. And melodies. And music. We will have a more in-depth review of this coming very soon.

SMOKE/LESS/FUELS

There's a great four-track free download EP available at the moment from the Irish blog Smokeless Fuels.

The four tracks are in a nu-skool garage vein - lots of skippy beats & samples and fat basslines, with some nice deep chords over the top of some of them too. The tracks are from the Standard Crew, who do a radio show too. These guys are new to us, but the quality of these tracks means we'll definitely be keeping an eye on them in the future. Fox Gut Daata = Live

Last night saw a live set from Little Rock favourite Fox Gut Daata at the Pandora Bar on Glasgow's sarf side, with DJing from LuckyMe's Joe and Numbers' Richard. Keep your eyes peeled for more FGD live (and studio) action on Little Rock in the not too distant future.

OK, after consideration we've decided that the audio quality on that clip is not good enough - so we've replaced it with a clip of Fox Gut's set supporting Gold Panda at Stereo last month. We hope to give you all of that set in the very near future.

Gerry Ryan = Dead

I woke up this morning to the news that Irish television and radio personality Gerry Ryan has died. He was 53 and it was not suspicious circumstances it seems.

It's a big shock - it won't mean much to anyone outside Ireland, but in UK terms it would be like Chris Evans dying. In fact Chirs Moyles might be more apt, but Ryan had a bigger profile in the mainstream than Moyles does. Still, the Moyles comparisson holds because Ryan divided audiences and listeners like oil and water. In short, I am not a fan of Ryan's style, but hey, he was somebody's dad and partner, so my thoughts go out to his family right now. Here's a clip of him swearing at Gordon Ramsay:

Hmm, the final line in this clip is oddly prescient.

My-My-My Telephone

There's a great article on boingboing.net about the telephone and how it is but an "abberation" in human history. Apparently the telephone has made us all slaves to other people's whims.

The article is basically just a quote from Rick Webb, but what makes it really great is the comments and the over-whelmingly anti-social nature of most of them. Now, I can get annoyed at my phone going off sometimes (a lot of the time even), but I don't think I am as extreme as some of the folk commenting here. I mean, where does the expectation come from that you MUST pick up your phone every time it rings? It's like TV, people - if it's pissing you off, turn it off!

This may be a good point to mention that I have just made a Hi-NRG remix of Lady Gaga's Telephone for Menergy, the subject of which is exactly what this article is about. Only now it is roughly 25-30% gayer than the original track.

See what I did there?
