'Odd Future's True Legacy' = impotent rage

or

'Older Critic Discovers Truism, Blames Younger Band'

"Odd Future have done me a favour. I was watching “Rella”, the new video by the Californian rap outfit, and there it was, at 1:22: a smack delivered to a woman’s face so hard that her head snapped to one side. And there I went, straight onto Twitter with my outrage, and in the process giving Odd Future precisely the marketing that they had bargained for. But, that said, they still did me a favour.

As I commented to a friend at the time, anyone who watches an Odd Future video probably gets exactly what they deserve, be it delight or disgust. Now that I’ve cooled down, my reaction to their work reminds me of the devout Christians who would listen in to Howard Stern’s radio show, comfortable and perhaps excited in the knowledge that they could take offence at any moment."

Gross Indecency

You can read my rant about the MIA "controversy" and the incident's rather patronising and sexist coverage in Douchefork over at Dangerous Minds.

As other writers have pointed out in the past, Pitchfork has a legacy of sexism to its tarnished name, which explains the hyperbolic over-reaction to a common hand gesture in this news piece. Had this been done by a man it would surely be lauded as “punk,” yet when MIA flips the bird during a televised game where grown men BEAT THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER, she’s an asshole who hates every single person watching her at that very moment. Living and dead. I mean seriously, how is anyone watching American Football going to cope with the mental scars that seeing a raised middle finger can bring?!?

Chris Korda "I Like To Watch"

Is this the most offensive song in the history of everything? Watch the vid and judge for yourself. There is no way in hell I am gonna post the original video (still below), which is like this one, but intercut with about 50 odd cum shots and lots of jocky American sport action. But hey, if that tickles your fancy, you can find it here.

This has shades of Chris Morris' extreme satyrical genius, and also a Ballardian sense of depersonalising an horrific incident through sexualisation of the subject matter. And it has teh megalolz (listen out for nostril spurting guffaw moments at c.1:20 and 2:40). This is almost ten years old now, but still retains its power.

Chris Korda is the transvestite leader of the cult The Church of Euthanasia, the four main pillars of which are Suicide, Abortion, Cannibalism and Sodomy (or any non-procreative sex). Signed to International Deejay Gigolo in the late 90's, s/he's a respected producer, though I'd never heard of this tune til a few days ago. Like a much more extreme version of the Church of Subgenius, CoE seems even more relevant today than it did in the 90s. Please come back and shock us some more Chris!

You can download I Like To Watch for free, along with remixes by Richard Bartz and Cannibal Whore Feast, right here.

RIP Aaron Carl

Really bad news coming in from Detroit - producer Aaron Carl has passed away.

Aaron's a fucking legend, in the world of house, techno, booty and on the gay scene. I never met him but we corresponded by email a lot, and had plans to work on some music together. He was sweet, genuine, caring and very passionate. This is one of those proper "FUCK YOU, WORLD!!!" moments. It hasn't really sunk in yet. My thoughts go out to his family and particularly his kids, who need all the love they can get right now. Goodnight sweet prince xxxx.

Bye-byespace!

So Myspace has a new layout - well, as Shannon Doherty says in Mallrats: "too little too late". Incredibly, Myspace still seems to see itself as competing for the same market as Facebook and Twitter (both of which do their own job much better thank you), while not playing up the fact that practically everyone in the world of music is on there. I guess Murdoch and co are bricking it at the thought of losing tens of millions of users, which is understandable as Myspace's sole revenue stream is advertising. But you know, this was always going to happen! It will happen to Facebook and Twitter too, when brighter shinier toys come along.

What's most annoying is that all this "pimping up" only addresses surface level factors, and major fundamental flaws (such as the search engines) have not been touched. Also, the user's homepage is now actually more confusing than before, as there is nothing to distinguish adverts from actual functions. I would like to know who exactly team Myspace consulted about these so-called improvements. I certainly don't think it was anyone in the world of music.

It's a real shame - I have been a Myspace user for a good 5 years now, and made some great connections out of it, and I still feel that if streamlined correctly it would be the best site for the music business. But alas, when has Murdoch ever done anything that was in the public interest? I'm with Andrew Dubber on this one. They've truly jumped the shark.

Fatal Deviation - Epic Irish Martial Arts Movie

Never heard of this film before, but then that's not hugely surprising. From the Fatal Deviation Wikipedia page:

"Fatal Deviation is a low-budget cult film produced and set in Trim, County Meath, Ireland. Produced in 1998, it enjoys the distinction of being Ireland's first full-length martial arts film. The film stars real-life martial arts enthusiast James Bennett. The movie went straight to video without a theatrical release."

The whole thing is on Youtube if you wanna watch:

Loke WIlson

Loke Wilson is an electronic musician from Norway who now lives in Turkey. His music is like a cross between Giorgio Moroder and Vangelis, like epic kids cartoon themes by way of Alden Tyrrell. But it is his somewhat "naive" videos that are making him a hit on Youtube. Here's one, the bizarrely titled "Prune Slicker":

This is slowly building up to being a sensation. Yet while this ticks many boxes of perfect internet memedom I think it lacks the kind of self-delusion required to blow it up to superstar status. Some of the Youtube comments are quite telling - one poster can't believe that in the three years that "Prune Slicker" has been online, he/teh internetz has only just discovered Loke. Perhaps intenetz culture is not as fast moving and as all-knowing as its users would like to think? But his following in Italo and electro circles is growing because of the quality of the music, and his future as a true geek hero is assured.

Anyway, whatever happens, this music is good, Mr Wilson has a lot of charm (both naive and knowing) and if you would like to hear more of his music, then this Mediafire page has free download links to nine of his tracks.

My-My-My Telephone

There's a great article on boingboing.net about the telephone and how it is but an "abberation" in human history. Apparently the telephone has made us all slaves to other people's whims.

The article is basically just a quote from Rick Webb, but what makes it really great is the comments and the over-whelmingly anti-social nature of most of them. Now, I can get annoyed at my phone going off sometimes (a lot of the time even), but I don't think I am as extreme as some of the folk commenting here. I mean, where does the expectation come from that you MUST pick up your phone every time it rings? It's like TV, people - if it's pissing you off, turn it off!

This may be a good point to mention that I have just made a Hi-NRG remix of Lady Gaga's Telephone for Menergy, the subject of which is exactly what this article is about. Only now it is roughly 25-30% gayer than the original track.

See what I did there?

Scarface School Play

Oh. My. God. What the hell were these teachers and parents thinking? This is hilarious - you will laugh if you can scrape your jaw off the floor. And just like that other comedy classic, Father Ted, they've donated a tonne of new fake swear words to popular culture - you mother fudgin son of a bee!

As seen on Dangerous Minds.

Happy Paddy's Day!

I am back in the mammyland right now, and it's been a long time since I was here on St Patrick's Day. I can hear the rumblings of the parade in the distance. To celebrate all things hilarious and Irish, here's a video of some boggers in Co. Limerick worshipping a tree stump. This may come across like a Day Today parody but every ounce of it is true. I love this clip - enjoy!

Too funky for the grave

Apparently James Brown's body has gone missing.

I hope this isn't a psychic side effect of all the coffee we've been drinking while listening to some of JB's greatest breaks.

Save Plastic People update

Well, as we mentioned before, Plastic People (probably the best club in London) is under threat of closure because of Hackney Council being a bunch of incompetent, greedy numpties (apparently). Well there is now a petition online for folk to sign to support the club. We highly recommend that everyone who reads this signs the petition. Even if you've never been to the club, please sign it! And if you haven't been, then make a date to go there the next time you are in London, it would be well worth it (if it's still there).

Here's the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/PP2010/petition.html
