What a bloody travesty! It seems Hackney council are trying to shut down Plastic People, on grounds of “prevention of crime and disorder and public nuisance basis." WTF?!
Plastic People is undoubtedly one of London's premier clubs, and certainly hosts one of the best sound systems I have ever heard. I seriously doubt it is one of the most troublesome clubs in the Shoreditch area, and if it does get shut down it will be a huge loss to the capital's music scene. The club has already hosted such legendary nights as FWD, Buzzin' Fly, Lost, Warm, Voices and sets from heavy weight djs like Kenny Dixon Jr, Francois Kevorkian, Theo Parrish, Gilles Peterson and Benji B. It's not a corporate club by any means - the place itself is tiny, decoration is minimal and it's all about the awesome PA (which is awesomely aweome - did I mention that it's awesome?). Hopefully the council will succumb to public pressure if enough people get behind the campaign. There's a Facebook page for the concerned, and you can get tweeting over here: http://twitter.com/search?q=%23saveplasticpeople
Tragedy man, that's a fucking great venue. Certainly not a social nuisance.
ReplyDeleteShoreditch: nobody gave a fuck about it til the clubs, bands and artists made it cool. Now that Shoreditch is cool (ie expensive, full of rich twats trying to get HIP positive by osmosis), those same clubs, bands and artists are a public nuisance. Same shit happens in every city. West end of Glasgow had the same thing back in the day.
