The Shallow Rave Show - 22nd March 2012

Shallow Rave's radio team returns! After last month's triumphant guest mix from TEXTBEAK, which garnered in excess of 1500 listens, hosts Liam, Boag and Bram (aka Black Lantern's Texture) are back to present their selection of the finest cuts in experimental and electronic music, with exclusives, classics and red-hot mixes.

You can download and stream below. Show A features some chat from the presenters about their selections, while Show B has just the music, nothing else. We'll be back very soon with Show 004, when we'll have some exciting news about the show, and some very special guests, including a guest mix from dark electronic / hip-hop wunderkind BL▲CK CEILING.

Benji B's Soundcloud

is well worth checking out. It features recordings from his BBC1 radio show and also sets from his London club night Deviation.

I have been hooked on a set from Deviation by synth boogie don Dam Funk. He really is the master at this kind of post-disco, American 80s funk sound:

Dam-Funk DJ Set | Recorded Live Deviation 1st Birthday Session by Benji B

And for people who STILL don't know what dubstep is exactly, check out this "History of Dubstep" special. It's a bit hit and miss for my liking, but a great rundown of the whos, whys, whats, wheres and whens:

Going live, right now, Sohrab, ambient / techno artist from Tehran and member of the UNOIKI collective, is being played out on BBC Radio 3. Just got the heads up from the Unoiki guys about this - Sohrab is being played on Fiona Talkington's Late Junction show, up 'till 1.15
Can't embed them, but lots of free music over on his soundcloud page. Go check it out.

Blast From Your New Beat Past

Back in 1989, Belgium wasn't pumping out Radio Soulwax likes there's no tomorrow; it had Liaisons Dangereuses

This mix has been floating around the internet for some time, but it really is time for you to get reacquainted. Look out for Dark Day and Renegade Soundwave - even in a mix this good, they really are something to behold

So, really, you should be able to download this mix, shouldn't you? Yes, you should! Now, Uno, Dos, Tres! Click away, my Spanish friends. You will not regret it

NB: If you want some playlist action, head here. If you're REALLY greedy, and want to know the last few songs on the mix, too, head here

Gerry Ryan = Dead

I woke up this morning to the news that Irish television and radio personality Gerry Ryan has died. He was 53 and it was not suspicious circumstances it seems.

It's a big shock - it won't mean much to anyone outside Ireland, but in UK terms it would be like Chris Evans dying. In fact Chirs Moyles might be more apt, but Ryan had a bigger profile in the mainstream than Moyles does. Still, the Moyles comparisson holds because Ryan divided audiences and listeners like oil and water. In short, I am not a fan of Ryan's style, but hey, he was somebody's dad and partner, so my thoughts go out to his family right now. Here's a clip of him swearing at Gordon Ramsay:

Hmm, the final line in this clip is oddly prescient.

Radio hotness

Brand new show went live yesterday, with a whole bunch of new tunes, and myself and Boag going at it across the decks.... Wu Tang definitely needed to be pitted against Muslimgauze. The new Locussolus is being massively hyped, get it when it hits the shops.

DFRNT - New Remix

I'm getting really into this guy's stuff. An Edinburgh-based producer who's debut album Metafiction dropped a couple of weeks back. Buy it here. We love his productions, and his dark, liquid style of tripped out electronic music, which might be deemed dubstep.
He's got plenty of freebies over at dfrt.com, and on his soundcloud. This one's a remix of Steve Foulds' Gentle Seduction. Nice.

Scuba and N-type are just some of the names backing him, and you can check an exclusive album preview over on our relaunch show on radiomagnetic.com. DFRNT for Little Rock, streaming.

Lady Afro Does Not Go Gentle

Kinky Afro was always one of the best nights in Glasgow. In it's heyday, it was a clusterfuck of awesomeness, with in house drummers, a playlist that just didn't exist and great vibes. Even recently they were booking pop acts one month and rhythm kings the next, never really looking too much to anyone else's lineup for inspiration.

Last night they had Mathew Herbert, back on the decks after his self-imposed exile, probably a one-off. He blew the shit out of the crowd as you'd expect, and most folks danced all the way til the 5am finish.

It was a shame to see it leave, but what a way to go.

Lady Afro, we salute you.

(you can listen to the mix they did for the birthday/funeral over on Radio Magnetic, the home of our own Little Rock show)
