Goblin live in Glasgow

The Gods of Awesome smile on us for once - it has been announced that the legendary Italian soundtrack band Goblin will be appearing live in Glasgow next February, as part of the Glasgow Film Festival! Some of us have been awaiting this moment for years. Goblin provided the soundtrack to horror classics like Dawn Of The Dead, Suspiria, Phenomena, Tenebre and many more. Here is clip of Goblin performing "Tenebre" a couple of years ago, a song famously sampled by French electro act Justice for their hit "We Suck Massive Donkey Knobs":



This truly is a time to rejoice my friends! More on the Goblin gig here. In other news, there seemes to be a mini-Giallo revival going on at the moment, what with Darren Aronofsky's The Black Swan said to be heavily influenced by Dario Argento, and the film "Amer" being even more of an hommage. Apparently it is like a filmic tone-poem and features no dialogue - I for one am intrigued:

Baba Brinkman - Live tonight

Baba Brinkmann Live Tonight! On the other side of the country, or 40 minutes train journey, depending how you look at it. I'd forgotten how good this guy is. Having made his name at the Edinburgh festival with The Rap Canterbury Tales, he's gone on to found a record label, tour incessantly, and create rap versions of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and most recently, The Origin of the Species.
Tonight, he plays live in Henry's Bar Cellar, 8pm-1am. A mere £4/5, with support from Chemical Poets and Dizraeli.

Team Little Rock return, in the flesh, to the Art School on Wednesday 15 September, presenting Holy Mountain, Blood of the Bull and Ben Butler and Mousepad live. Cry Parrot Minterview & Compilation #3

Local DIY gig promoting legends Cry Parrot have just released their third compilaiton album through Winning Sperm Party (more on that below). I thought that would be a good excuse to send main Parrot Mr Fielding Hope our usual set of 10 questions to get his chops aboot.




What made you start putting on gigs?

I got really into the whole thing after seeing loads of my friends bands being exploited by promoters. Seeing them sell 20-30 tickets, play in front of no one then not being paid a penny totally broke my heart. People like Nuts and Seeds and This Is Our Battlefield really inspired me to cut the crap and refuse to put up with all the bullshit that was - and still is - going on.

I always thought of it as quite a rewarding thing, too. The idea that you can support music that you love was always an appealing idea to me.

"Cry Parrot" - how did you come up with the name?

It was my good friend Ewan - who used to be involved in Cry Parrot - who came up with it. I think it had some really deep meaning at the time, but i've completely forgotten. Whats quite funny now is realizing its uncanny similarity to 70's Scottish cult band 'Chou Pahrot'.

Pieces of eight or would you rather have a cracker?

Piece of eight as in CHOCOLATE pieces of eight? If so, pieces of eight...

What's the best gig you've put on so far?

Theres quite a lot that are really memorable: Sic Alps playing in front of the biggest, most enthusiastic crowd ever at the Glasgow Social Centre, the first New Year fest (Ultimate Thrush's first ever gig) or the time when O'Henrys were threatening to call the police during a Action Beat / Destructo Swarmbots / Vars of Litchi & Remember Remember gig. I've loved all our gigs this year, too.

And the worst (come on be honest!)?

Haha, theres a few that come to mind, but i'd say Tickley Feather at the V Club sticks out. None of the venue monitors were working and most of the band's equipment was fucking up really bad. I think it was received in good spirit by the crowd, but jeez - embarrassing stuff.

Anyone you'd like to put on you haven't?

I think i've been really lucky that most of the smaller acts I love i've been able to put on. Because Cry Parrot is independent or 'DIY', we get offered acts of a specific size and commercial outlook, while bigger promoters deal with everyone else. Right now i'd love to organize a gig for Oneohtrix Point Never, Lucky Dragons or Forest Swords.

BBC 4 or Radio 4?

I'm not much of a radio or TV man to be honest! Pretty sure i've seen some good programmes on BBC 4 but my mind fails me.

How did the albums come about?

Winning Sperm Party is such a perfect platform for new, independent music, so it just made sense. I think its helped a lot in giving people a taster of our nights and some music they might have not heard before.

What have you got coming up in the next few months?

Loads! Full listings can be seen at www.cryparrot.co.uk. Really chuffed we got Grouper, who I absolutely love. It'll be great having The Ex, Sun Araw and Gary War back, too.

NORAVE Freshers Party / Mix

Well, there's been a bit of a change of plan to our proposed Art School NORAVE residency. The Arty now want us do it on a weekend night on a monthly basis. These details are being finalised as I write.

We will still be holding the Freshers Party in the Vic Bar on Wednesday September 15th, as previously advertised, with special guests (and Shallow Rave favourites) Ben Butler & Mouse Pad (live), Blood Of The Bull (live), Dam Mantle (dj set) and Team Little Rock djs. Doors open at 9pm and close at 2am, and entry is £3 or FREE if you are a student at the GSA. Huzzah!

Tonight - Miaoux Miaoux Single Launch

Our mate Miaoux Miaoux has a new single coming out tomorrow ("Knitted", which come in rather fetching, hand-made knitted sleeves), and in support of the release he's doing a few live shows round the country. Tonight his mini-tour kicks off in Glasgow at the Captain's Rest. Support comes from the one and only Fox Gut Daata (great line-up!), and doors will open around 8-ish. We highly recommned that you be there.

Glasgow's finest "angry jazz" act XMRV (think At the Drive In, but more METAL and female fronted) play at Nice and Sleazy's tomorrow, alongside local metal-core growlers Nude Pilots and Can-esque kraut-rockers Wrongnote. Filling in the gaps and taking us to the end will be Little Rock affiliated Molotov Disco, playing a cocktail of classics, past present and future, with a slightly heavier bent than usual. Current playlists suggest a hefty dose of post-punk, No Wave and The Cramps, plus the darker and weirder edge of club culture. As usual, there's some free tunes for you to check out....

Gigs this weekend.

Last night saw the third birthday bash of one of our favourite local gig promoters, CRY PARROT.

These guys have been putting on DIY gigs for three years and have put on some amazing shows. We could do a list of all the bands they have put on, but they've done that already and you can see it here. It would take all day to list them, but suffice to say that 8 of the acts on FUCKNO have played for them, so you know they've got good taste.

Miaoux Miaoux @ King Tuts *Cancelled*

Miaoux Miaoux makes gorgeous tunes; electropop / ambient with lush melodies and slick beats. Something akin to Ulrich Schauss, Rune Grammofon and Panda Bear colliding with a truckload of Codeine. It is so nice. He's playing King Tut's tonight in support of Unicorn Kid; a down-with-the-kids, Edinburghian producer who's got a heck of a following from big names like the NME etc etc. 7 Bucks entry, doors at 8. Be there early for Miaoux Miaoux. MM tunes due on Little Rock soon as well....

EDIT: Miaoux Miaoux has just informed us he's ill and will be pulling out of the gig. This saddens us, and we wish him speedy recovery. Catch him next month as well though, in the 13th Note, on the 16th of March.

Molotov Disco

So, attention deficit as we are at Little Rock, everyone's got six other projects on the go.
Molotov Disco is a transient club night spinning a cocktail of classics, past, present and future, and features Kid Ritalin (Team Little Rock), alongside OCD and Kyriakov. Mixing smoothly between reggae, funk, techno, disco, dubstep and all the rest, Molotov Disco is all about crossing genres and combining all that's club-friendly.

Asakusa Jinta

... Are absolutely awesome. Big up to Keith and Johnny at Optimo for getting these guys to play Glasgow. For want of a better description, I'd call it Ska. At times, it's heavy, thrashy, poppy, offbeat and rhythmically complex. They absolutely rocked Optimo, and I'm now the proud owner of their album. I'll get a track up later today.

They're one of the most engaging live acts I've seen in a long time - weird, but with a pure fun outlook. The frontman spent most of the evening balanced on his stand-up bass, the guitarist has the most sickeningly heavy riffs, the saxophone/ clarinet player is thoroughly beautiful. The crowd applauded the singer simply for managing one sentence in English.

Their music takes in a lot of traditional Japanese music forms and folk influences; a melting pot of Japanese culture, from the traditional to contemporary. This video gives some of the flavour of what they're about. Awesome.
