Brain Activity

We like a bit of Blue Daisy on this blog.  His ear for massive noise-scapes lifts his music out of the trip hop genre and into something futuristic and comfortingly dystopian; like William Gibson doing yearn-core.

The new shit? Well, it turns out that shit's fuckin' awesome as well.

Follow him on twitter, where I found the above excerpts.

Hold Me Close Now, Tiny Trancer

Jack Death has been a hero of mine ever since my too-young mind was exposed to 'Trancers' by the scifi and fantasy obsessed uncle who used to supply me with kick ass video tapes, from the A-Team to Star Trek, cartoons to cult movies most people haven't even heard of now, and sometimes even the odd book. Thank you Alan. You probably shouldn't have, but thank fuck you did.

He also got me into 'The Sword and The Sorcerer', another gleaming gem of my childhood. The crucifixion banquet scene has stayed with me my whole life, informing my sense of heroism and the masochistic pursuit of revenge. Plus the bit when he pulls the nails out is fuckin' awesome.

But I'm getting distracted... What did Jack Deth, the peerless, hardboiled trancer-hunter teach me? Well, he taught me that Whistler had a mother, for one thing.

You know, actually, that might have been it.

Still, it had Helen Hunt in it. So there's that.

Okay, so my shameless love of an 80s anti-classic is likely be based on an 8 year old's warm reception for all things kick ass, but it's a very real emotion, and I'm happy with it.

Given my uncritical acceptance of same, you can imagine my joy when Seth over at Bang the Bore sent me a link to this:

I'm not sure if any of this rambling nostalgia trip has a point to it, but Black Stepdad's video pushes a lot of my buttons, and not sharing it is not really an option.

An hour and a half of synthesisers, trancers,  grainy VHS and some really terrible physical acting. What's not to love?

Ancient Methods @ La Cheetah, Resurface Records

The teutonic marching music of Ancient Methods was a cobweb-clearing sonic blast last night in La Cheetah. It was enthusiatically recieved, showing again that Glasgow crowds not only love techno, but they love techno that pushes the art forward.

Supported by one of the most versatile DJs in the city - Domenic Cappello - those industrial sculptures of martial motion are book-ended by a performance that far surpasses anything I have ever heard from Cappello before. Away from his ancestral home of Subclub, he is as comfortable as I have ever seen him. I recognise less than half of what he plays, and I love almost every single track. Not only does he know what I like, but he know what I should like. As the crowd begins to swell, so the pace rises. As we approach the end of his set, the dance floor is all but everyone.

Ancient Methods, however, is something else. The live set is delivered with an occasional grin (and at least one hail satan) and is everything I had expected from one of the most exciting producers in the genre. The rhythm is complex, and the pulse is insistent; whenever it breaks down, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, anticipating the return of that hypnotic beat. The unrelenting drive of the Ancient Methods sound occasionaly inhales, but that is all the respite that comes in well over an hour of beautifully crafted brutality.

Despite having been described as 'pitch black techno war funk', the unassuming genius behind it all tells us he isn't really a fan of funk... So does that mean it's just pitch black techno war? I'm not sure he'd say so himself, but after that performance I'm not sure I'd ride into battle with anything else on the stereo.

Promoted by forward thinking techno purists Resurface Records, I can only hope there is more to come.

The highlight reel of Tamil film, 'Enthiran'. Probably a spoiler for the full film, but I'm not sure that matters.

Cheers Warren.

Atari Teenage Riot - Live

Atari Teenage Riot are nothing short of legendary. Having changed the face of both electronic and rock music in their intense career, and given the world a vast number of collaborators, apprentices and bastard permutations, they've left a legacy that will last for decades. I saw them perform last night at the Arches (current line-up of Alec Empire, Nic Endo and MC CX Kidtronix) and holy fuck did they rip it up! I used to love Ministry, Fear Factory and Red Harvest, who I thought were heavy, but to paraphrase Dalai Dahmer, discovering Atari Teenage Riot is like thinking Maiden are heavy, then seeing Slayer in full effect. This was a near-unrelenting blast of amen breaks, d'n'b tempos and shouty punk sloganeering that never lost itself in the white noise that often smothers black or speed metal. Classics like ATR, Revolution Action and Destroy 2000 Years of Culture rattle past in a blaze of call and response, with MC CX Kidtronix and Empire taking it in turns to whip the crowd up with a mixture of fierce anti-capitalist rhetoric and mindless fuck-punk nihilism.

Managing to be more brutal than death-industrial like the Berzerker whilst retaining a groove, ATR's mechanical battery never lapses into simple crush-kill-destroy techno - it's intense, mad-mental fun, and peppered with subtle melodies. Nic Endo, who handles most of the backing tracks from an MPC, is possessed of a delicate but powerful voice that cuts through the noise with amazing clarity - her solo performance when Empire retreats behind his drum machines was one of the many highlights.

Some people have seen fit to write Atari Teenage Riot's reformation off as a cash-cow, or a vanity project, and truthfully, this is not the same band that terrorised Glasgow back in 1993, but neither is it the same world, musically or politically. This is still a band at the height of their talents; invigorated, enthused and unafraid to experiment or take risks. The break-up of Rage Against The Machine put one of the many nails in the coffin of political music, and a backlash carried through the early 21st century which saw a socially-conscious agenda as a hindrance to performance. Atari Teenage Riot in 2010 is a reminder that performance is protest, that music can be inspiring, intelligent and remain as vitalistic as chewing on fresh adrenal glands.

With economic collapse, illegal wars and students actually motivated and angry enough to march on the government and physically break their security, it feels like we once again need bands like Atari Teenage Riot. We need million-selling artists whose new single is free on soundcloud. We need albums controversial enough to be censored and banned by the German government, and artists wild enough to play the tracks from it every time they perform. We need music that screams rebellion, white-hot anger, and the glorious freedom of creativity.

Atari Teenage Riot; FUCK YEAH.

Axe Cop - A Superhero With A Badge. And An Axe.

You may already know about the chap to the left. His stories have been up for a while. The last day or two I've been absorbed by the action packed adventures of the unquenchably bad-ass officer of the law known as Axe Cop.

With an ever mutating, rotating and warring cast, Axe Cop reads like an alternate universe Jerry Bruckheimer writing comics without an editor.

In reality it's the debut project of writer Malachai Nicolle, with help from his more experienced artist brother, Ethan Nicolle.

Malachai and Ethan take us on a jam-packed journey of righteous crime-fighting fury and chaotic plot twists, ramping up the excitement as the unwavering Axe Cop gains allies in his war against injustice; through zombie infestations, vampires from the moon, unicorn horns and shocking betrayal...

He will cut your head off, unless your neck is really, really strong.

Divorce / Breaking Colts @ Fight Club

Divorce
SLAYED on Sunday night at the Tiger Lounge in Manchester. But then, I always knew they would! Though the current hectic tour schedule may be taking its toll on the members' minds (and ears), it's making their sonic assault tight as fuck. If you have a chance to check out any of their remaining dates, do, you will not be disappointed. There are lots of lovely tour photos over on the Divorce blog.

All the bands on the bill rocked, but I particularly liked Breaking Colts, a female duo wading their way through a sea of sonic sludge armed with only a bass and a drum kit. It's heavy. I was stoned. Result! Fans of Holy Mountain should check them out - here's their Myspaz: http://www.myspace.com/breakingcolts

and here's a clip of them playing live:

Chrome Hoof at Bestival 2010

OK, as much as I bitched on about Bestival this year, there was some good stuff too. One of the highlights was seeing Chrome Hoof playing avant disco-metal on the fire spitting, spider-shaped retro-futurist Archadia stage. SERIOUS Thunderdome vibes in the area!

Scaaaan

As if Phil Mitchell on crack wasn't good enough - the BBC has just announced that Chris Morris is going to be directing some episodes of Eastenders!! A short clip of one has just been leaked - OMG this is going to be amazing!
