Shallowrave's
monthly radio show features a mixtape from in-studio guest Asthmatic
Astronaut, who talks hip-hop, 80s synth music, and his forthcoming live
shows. Plus, brand new tunes from Guy Andrews and Aural Sects, and some
techno from Horizontal Ground.
Texture is 1/3 of Shallow Rave's current radio team, and the co-founder of boutique netlabel Black Lantern Music and spoken word noiseniks Chemical Poets. His three EPs, released on Black Lantern between 2009 and 2011, have been collected and lovingly remastered by fellow Black Lantern producer (and next Shallow Rave show's special guest!) Asthmatic Astronaut, along with two new tracks, and remixes by AA, hip-hop-blues fusionista Mild Maynyrd, THEFT//OBJECTIVE aka rapper/producer p.WRECKS, and dark electronic star I††. NEUROLEPTICA is available as a limited edition CDR with deluxe, foldout artwork by D. Miranda Pole, hand numbered and signed by Texture.
Featuring tracks by Church Of When The Shit Hits The Fan, CRIM3S, Schneider TM, W0LCNUM, Tash Willmore, Kloaks remixed by spf5Ø, Vagina Vangi, Tyler the Creator, †‡†, Ghostpoet, 12Bit Murder, Gang Gang Dance remixed by blackbird blackbird, Death Grips, Telepathe remixed by UNISON, and absolutely tons more!
Apparently, it's been available for a good wee while now, but due to the impossible-to-locate Voltergeist, I've not yet seen the full thing. So, here's the 20 minute edit of the Glasgow Soundcloud meet-up event, including lots of panel chat from Paul Reset, Muslim Alim and Texture.
Texture's got a new mix up on his "T3XTUR3" Soundcloud - a mix of witch house/drag and some interesting downbeat stuff. It's nice and scary.
"Recorded at the abandoned weaponlabs facility, six months after 'the event'... All degradation in sound quality is due to EMP-damaged hard drives - please adjust bass manually. For captain fauxhammer, admiral j. tacolexa and the ghosts of Whitechapel."

"Scottish Hip-hop is a non-sequitr"... With the Silver Age EP (featuring Kid Ritalin) dropping tonight, here's a preview of what the new material from Texture sounds like... I've heard him dropping this a number of times at Slams and spoken word nights over the years, and that "Bacardi Breezers" line still makes me grin.
From weaponizer "Big up all the Scottish hip-hop heroes who inspired this verse: Harlequinade, Tickle, Laughing Gear, the Penpushers, Asthmatic Astronaut, J Seal and Livesciences, Quietman, Stanley Odd, Fountainbridge Collective, Lifeshows, Soom T, Salem Anders, Morphamish, 5hit-Hop Ninja Terminatorz, Krowne, Profisee and Ema J, Monkeytribe, B-Burg, Dan Bland, the Volume! crew, Surface Emp, Loki and Skatabrainz, Verse 1, Abdominal Showmen, Yush2k crew, all LuckyMe crew, MCF crew, Jee4ce, Nasty P, Vigilante, Spytec, Granite Emcees, Nu Urban Frontier, Nafees, all Dropzone Records crew... and to anyone writing real beats and rhymes... hit us up at Black Lantern Music. Top Edinburgh download label Black Lantern Music is one year old this month, so to mark the occassion (and to plug their birthday party-cum-gig on Sunday) we sent founder Bram Gleiben, aka Texture, ten very special questions to get his gob around.
What?
The first birthday party for Black Lantern Music (www.blacklanternmusic.com), Edinburgh's premier netlabel and home of underground hip-hop, dubstep, electronica and experimental music. Who?
Fresh from destroying T-in-the-Park and supporting Sage Francis, special guests Stanley Odd (Circular Records) join the Black Lantern family for a riotous evening of homegrown hip-hop, bass music and electronica. We've got Morphamish, delivering a body-shaking set of live dubstep. We've got Eaters, one of Edinburgh's longest running and best-loved hip-hop bands, performing material from the acclaimed album 'Shouting At The Wind'. There's head-nodding, fat-as-fuck electro from Krowne, plus the explosive live debut of Asthmatic Astronaut and Harlequinade's new hip-hop / electro project, Church Of When The Shit Hits The Fan. The event is hosted by Chemical Poets spoken-word-burglars Tickle and Texture.
When?
Sunday 3rd October Two Thousand and Ten. We kick off at 7pm, and finish at 1am.
Where?
Henry's Cellar Bar, Morrison Street, Edinburgh. Which, incidentally, is the ancestral seat of Edinburgh hip-hop - the legendary basement bar where Penpushers, The Pesky Varmints, Scotland Yard Emcees, Finely Quaye and a whole host of classic Scottish hip-hop acts used to gig, back in the day... Yep, we're going back to the roots of this shit!
Why?
Well for a start, it's free before 11pm! I mean, you'd have to be a pretty boring bastard to turn down a free gig with six bands on a Sunday night, right? Also, it's our birthday! We're celebrating twelve months of Black Lantern Music, and 24 top-quality albums / EPs unleashed for you, the beautiful downloading public, absolutely free of charge!
How?
To quote George, "Free your mind, and your ass will follow."
Which?
Which band? Which style? Which beat? That's the beauty of it - you don't have to pick one! With so many top quality acts playing live, there will literally be something for everyone.
Could?
Could... you bring some friends? Absolutely! The more the merrier.
Would?
Yes, Black Lantern Music: We Are One will most definitely give you wood. Should?
Baba Brinkmann Live Tonight! On the other side of the country, or 40 minutes train journey, depending how you look at it. I'd forgotten how good this guy is. Having made his name at the Edinburgh festival with The Rap Canterbury Tales, he's gone on to found a record label, tour incessantly, and create rap versions of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and most recently, The Origin of the Species. Tonight, he plays live in Henry's Bar Cellar, 8pm-1am. A mere £4/5, with support from Chemical Poets and Dizraeli.
Here's some more Black Lantern Music-related business for folks to check out.
The Edinburgh-based producer Morphamish (who dropped the wicked Urge Mode EP on Black Lantern a few months back) has put a couple of new tracks up on his Soundcloud page.
Both tracks feature MCs, and the first to step up to the gauntlet is the well know Edi rapper Profisee (who recently took over Vic Galloway's New Music Scotland BBC slot for a show) with a remix of his track "Movin'". It's great to see these guys together, and the track is a wicked uptempo, slightly glitchy, double-time groover that will do as it says on the tin.
The other track gets a big shout out from us featuring as it does Black Lantern/Weaponizer's Texture but also Shallow Rave's very own Kid Ritalin! It's more downtempo and even more glitchy, with a head nod feel helped by raps that reference the Invisibles (surprise!), Dark City and a general dystopia. It's called "Silver Age".
I mentioned this a while back, via Iamus' own blog, but it's finally gone up as Weaponizer's front page, as well as guarantee from Texture that there will be one new fiction piece per weekday uploaded from now on.I'm also really enjoying Peter Morrison's Parlimentary Candidate #1, also from Weaponizer - a speculative / satirical fiction with unsurprising relevance these days
PROSPECTIVE PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATE NO. 1 by PETER MORRISON
When the Prime Minister himself phoned me to tell me I’d been selected as Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for [CENSORED] I was thrilled – the Prime Minister himself, phoning me! On reflection I should have been suspicious; it should have been the first alarm bell that something was wrong. The fact that my mother burst into tears should have been the second alarm bell – I mean real distraught sobs, not tears of happiness. But I was keen, I was eager, I was naive.... (Read More)
Lono - Hello El Oh En Oh Mix Mount Heart Attack are one of Glasgow's finest nights, spinning a twisted mix of wonk, techno, garage and everything in between, they bang the hell out of La Cheetah (Max's Kansas City) once a month. Last month saw the legendary Jason Leach knock the fuck out of it, and this saturday sees them bringing Ben Pest and 3d!t along for the party (11-3, 7/8bucks.) For now, Resident Lono's put together a surreal mix of country, electro, garage and wha? Awesome. Hello el oh en oh by ryan_j_smith
Texture - Neural Lace Nae more wubstep, Black Lantern / Weaponizer head honcho Texture has done a wee trip-hop, chill-out mix. Autechre, HudMo, Soom T and the like. Ya dig? Neural Lace by Texture
Twitch Mixing for LuckyMe You don't really need to be told much about LuckyMe / Ballers Social at the moment - they're deservedly media darlings, and put out HudMo's first big hit before Warp snapped him up. However, their mixtape series is awesome and is up to the 70th now, including Rustie, HudMo, Hrdvision and more. I've just got round downloading Twitch's mix for them, and it's awesome. No tracklisting, no clues, it's Twitch. Go download.
Beatsmith, wordsmith, member of the gutter press, DJ, curator of Black Lantern music and Weaponizer, Slam Poet, MC, Ungodly Spambot of Twitter and friend of Team Little Rock. Ladies, gentlemen and any other dominant lifeforms, Little Rock are proud to present Texture. Texture's biography would take far too long to fill in here - suffice to say, as a journalist, author, slam poet and MC, Texture's passion is words (Check out his Aphasia EP on Black Lantern to hear more). However, he also produces and DJs, and has contributed a rare solo production for FUCKNO. A Dark Wind Blows' only vocals are taken from a certain group of Canadian anarchists, and are backed by a dark, throbbing electro pulse interspersed with delicate melodies.
