New Shallowradio episode dropping very soon - killer tunes from Skudge, Cristian Vogel, Space Dimension Controller and brand new material from techno's grizzled vets, The Black Dog. Two hours of aural chaos from the best damn radio show on the internet.

Slam - Atlantis Mix

Despite their undeniable influence on both Glasgow's club scene and house music in general, I've never been the biggest fan of Slam- on the other hand, when they back-to-back with Harri as Atlantis, it's generally pretty awesome. The Atlantis Boat Cruise, this saturday therefore comes pretty highly recommended, as Glasgow starts to come alive for three weeks and pretend Summer's actually a thing we do. Tickets still available, from various sources.

Pinch - FabricLive 61

Pinch - FabricLive 61 (16 January)

I don't generally give the Fabric mixes much coverage, partly because they hardly need the rub, partly because few of the mixes lately have gone beyond being predictably okay;
whilst I enjoyed Brodinski's fusion of disco, house, hip-hop and Balearic on Fabriclive 60, there hadn't been a great deal else pushing my buttons lately. I'm listening to a stream of Pinch's forthcoming mix, due in February, and aside from the infuriating Hal-lite voiceover designed to prevent me from making illegal copies, this is a beauty of a mix that takes in a brilliant array of sounds and styles. There's saw-toothed half-step from the likes of Jakes and Goth-Trad, Addison Groove's Juke/Footwork inspired spasticity and even some more straight-up techno from the likes of Shed's EQD project, chopping and changing without becoming confusing or incoherent. Similarly, Pinch throws in multiple dynamic shifts to wrong-foot the listener, booting off with the high energy Venom pt 2 by Distal, he wallops the listener into submission before dropping into Pinch & Shackleton's haunting Rooms within Rooms to break up the mix fairly quickly after. Often this kind of chop-and-change gets all too Jive Bunny, and there's a few FabricLive that have suffered from being too attention deficit and not allowing tracks to breathe (Caspa, Rusko, this means you). However, Pinch's sense of dynamic and narrative makes for a compelling journey.

Pinch's main strength as a producer has always been his ability to create an intense, claustrophobic atmosphere - Underwater Dancehall's sense of sparseness and depth made it one of the more successful artist albums of the UK bass explosion, and he's one of the few dubstep artists I'll contemplate buying on vinyl. Whilst it's full of screeching synths and wobble bass, Pinch channels the same subdued sense of menace into his mix, and we're treated to a skull-crushingly heavy delight.

Sell By Dave pres The Masque Of The Red Death re-soundtracked

Loving this - reminds me of what the Orb were up to in the late 80s and very early 90s, but with an old school Hammer horror twist. Not that I was at the original Orb parties mind, I've just read about the times they would play music, sound effects, film snippets and the like and jam over it with machines.

Anyway, here is Sell By Dave's own words on this project:

"I'm going to give the people what they want…sensation, horror, shock… send them out into the streets to tell their friends how wonderful it is to be scared to death" - Vincent Price, House of Wax

In the autumn of 2010, I was asked by Caravan Records boss October and Idle Hands mainman Chris Farrell whether I would like to do a DJ set with a twist - performing a new soundtrack to a film of my choice, which would be screened in the backroom of the Timbuk2 club in Bristol. I thought it was a great idea, and chose The Masque Of The Red Death, Roger Corman's 1960s version of the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name.

I was inspired by the opportunity of providing a new soundtrack, but wanted the music and visuals to work perfectly in sync. I didn't want it to just be "some records over a film". So, I painstakingly edited each track to fit scenes, added sound effects, layered things up, captured speech from the original film, and so on. It was a laborious process, but on the night – when I mixed it all live, in time with the film, it worked wonderfully. The next day, I sat down and recorded a studio version of the mix, which was then edited down again in time with the film.

Hopefully one day there will be a DVD version, with the new soundtrack on top of the original film, but for now take a listen to the audio - it took a long time to put together. As the original film is pretty trippy, this soundtrack is, too. And it features the Monkees "in dub hell", as a friend of mine put it.

Enjoy."

We will!

Trish Keenan: 'Mind Bending Motorway Mix'

I posted this on Dangerous Minds last week, but it deserves to be shared again. Trish Keenan was the singer in the indie/electronica band Broadcast, who died last week of pneumonia.

Image via Bobo Epileptic.

Just before the recent trip to Australia on which she contracted swine flu, Broadcast singer Trish Keenan compiled some experimental music and psyche-pop for a friend, and called it the “Mind Bending Motorway Mix.” The mix (which has no track list), has been uploaded as a tribute to the late musician, with a view to being shared with as many people as possible. Joe Muggs at The Arts Desk writes:

“A friend in Birmingham who had become good friends with Keenan in recent years has passed me THIS LINK for a “mixtape” she gave him very recently. It’s the most wonderful collection of psychedelic rarities, film music and synthesiser experiments, and perfectly illustrates Keenan’s constant mission to turn people on to exquisite and unusual sounds - but also, as the tracks are not titled, shows the sense of mystery and incentive to investigate with which she imbued all her work.”

DeathKill4000 Mix / Minterview

DeathKill4000 - it's a club night. And also some kind of weird religion. We hear they worship noise and have a third sex deity. Primarily active in the Glasgow underground in the middle of the last decade, DK4K has recently returned from beyond the grave to the new venue of Bloc. New for them that is - Bloc is old. We asked them to do us a mix, and resident Dirty Marc (aka Monty Funk - he means to have you boy) was only too happy to oblige. Here it is in all its noisy/post-dubstep/glitchy/slightly-rocky glory:

Brian Eno - Complex Heaven
Whitehouse - Foreplay
Evil Nine - Die
Borgore - Saturday Night
Rustie - Hyperthrust
Monty Funk - Robocop
Kanye West - Power (Loop)
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - Eventually We Find Our Way
Eels - Get Your Freak On (Loop)
Bot'ox - Tout Passe, Tout Lasse, Tout Casse
Joker - Digidesign (Om Unit Mix)
Herrmutt Lobby - Fat Manual
Mux Mool- Death 9000
Grinderman - Super Heathen Child
Grinderman - Heathen Child (Weatherall Mix)
Luke Vibert - Lfo
Zola Jesus - Night
The Bug - Poison Dart (Dj Baku Megamix)

And as a special Brucey bonus I managed to corner Marc to do us a wee interview, 9 questions in total:

Where did the name come from?

My fellow selector FiFi Chops and our good friend, guitar ace Gunthor Manhunter were discussing humorous names for a fictitious metal band back in 2003. The best one seemed to fit the idea for a night we were planning to start and so we stole it.

When did you start Deathkill4000?

The 1st DK4K was at the Woodside Social Club on 26th June 2003 - it was a wonderful mess.

What was the inspiration for the club?

I'd been DJing at some gigs put on by the other DK-founder, Clitoris Party, and we thought it'd be good to try a club night. We wanted to put on something that always had an uncompromising live act and with a music policy that reflected the breadth of our tastes in rock and electronic noise. We needed a good name though, and FiFi not only provided one, she also came on board to add to the musical breadth with her own extreme tastes. At that time, there was really nothing else like it in Glasgow.

Electric chair or lethal injection?

Firing squad - so much more heroic.

What one tune will always ignite the DK4K floor?

Slayer - Angel of Death is always a winner, you can't really argue with Slayer!

What is the best band you have ever put on?

That's a tough one. A couple that stick out for me are The Bronx's 1st ever UK headline show at DeathKill at the Barfly - total punk mayhem. Lesbians On Ecstasy blew everyone away and on a personal note, I always had a blast with Vancouver electro-shock-rappers Stinkmitt (and they put on a hell of a show). [I can confirm that as I was there - it was aweosme!]

Charles Manson or Ted Bundy?
I'll let FiFi take this one, she's the serial killer expert.
"Manson. He MADE OTHER PEOPLE KILL, that's power right there."

During the DK4K hiatus, what clubs would you frequent?
Mainly, anywhere that would let me DJ, but I did sometimes go other places... The Sub Club is hands down my favourite place to frequent, and to DJ at - in Glasgow at least.

Ideally, how would you like to die?
Ideally, I wouldn't - but when I do I'd like my remains to be shot into space - let the infinity of the Universe make some eventual sense of me.

Co-Op Club @ Sub Club

Co-op Club is a new weekly club which lauches tonight at the Sub Club. It's a collaborative effort between Glasgow based promoters Dirty Noise, Mount Heart Attack and Orderly Disorder and comes with the student-friendly entry price of £2/3. The guys have posted a wee "war" themed minimix to promo Co-Op, and it's definitely worth a listen:

Maximalism mix - Avant-Avant

I had a wander through Avant-Avant the other day. They describe themselves as "a post-genre music blog in an era of overabundance of cultural choices" and, wank as that sounds, it's at least accurate.

I started my wander at their page of drone tracks (which you can play simultaneously...) and kept clicking about.
Eventually I came across a mixtape from a couple of weeks back, Maximalism.
I'm listening to it right now.

The mix is a collaboration with french magazine P45, where you'll find the tracklist, but I cannot recommend strongly enough that you go on a click odyssey through Avant-Avant. Your ears will thank you.
If you just want the mix, you can yank that here.

You don't just want the mix.

DJ Goatface Killah Presents... "Ave Satanas"

DJ Goatface Killah made a name for himself at the Satanic Toga Party a few months back by supplying the devil-worshipping revellers with a soundtrack of non-stop Dark Lord-themed hits. This being the witching season, we asked him to do a Satanic mix for Shallow Rave, and here it is. It's rather bloody good too, and surprisingly features nothing from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (no, that's a different Iron Maiden). HAIL SATAN! \m/
