Space Dimension Controller - Return to Microsector 50 ()

Space Dimension Controller - Return to Microsector 50 (R&S, 25 Feb)

In the past, we've possibly been a little disparaging of Space Dimension Controller, not for the quality of his music, which is an unquestionably excellent fusion of electro-funk, techno, cosmic disco, but for the over-the-top presentation he insists on. The musical Kayfabe that he adheres to draws so heavily from trash-fiction and indulges it without a shred of self-knowing, that it comes across as slightly demented... However, SDC's Mr 8040 character and his rapidly-expanding universe do have their own unique charm, and with the fine line between genius and madness blurring at post-light speeds, Return to Microsector 50 currently orbits the twin moons of "so bad it's good" and "so bad it's horrible". To put it another way, I can't decide if its Batman and Robin or Batman; The Movie.

As well as the fact that the music's bloody brilliant, it's SDC's dedication to and enthusiasm for the gimmick that's slowly turning me into a convert; this teaser EP for debut album Welcome to Microsector-50 features a final track of ambient washes and desolate drones that seems fairly typical of electronic EPs. Its title? Music for Spaceports. It's this hilariously irreverent bastardisation of Eno's terminology for his own ends that just tips the balance and lands Space Dimension Controller firmly in the land of the eccentric genius. As noted, the rest of the EP's pretty damn good too, functioning as both deleted scenes from the full album and the missing links of Space Dimension Controller's musical history - the title track joins the dots between Juan Atkins and the Rotters Golf Club, and Whilst I Was Away brings together aspects of ambient and dub that feel a little disparate in the album's lengthier interludes and had left Quadraskank Interlude feeling out of place. Most importantly though, the EP flat out drips cosmic slop, opening up into a massive George Clinton homage, replete with future-funk riffs, wailing guitar solos and acid-fried fantastical narratives.

For me, the Funkadelic love is the last piece of the puzzle that suddenly makes sense of SDC's overblown narratives and deliberately trashy vocals - it's the cornerstone that contextualises everything else and gives credence to magnificent combination of funk and psychadelica.

RIP Phelps Catfish Collins

It's not been a good year for the members of P-Funk. First Garry Shider, now Phelps "Catfish" Collins has died. The older brother of Bootsy Collins, Catfish played guitar with Bootsy in both the P-Funk bands, with James Brown as the JB's, and as part of Bootsy's Rubber Band. He passed last Friday after a long battle with cancer.

F.I.P. Garry Shider 1953-2010

Bad news funkateers.

Garry Shider, the legendary nappy-wearing singer/guitarist from Parliament-Funkadelic has died at the age of 56. Unfortunately he had been battling cancer since the start of the year.

Though not a founding member of either group, after joining Funkadelic in the early 70s he quickly rose within the ranks of both bands to become the musical director of the P-Funk live show. And as anyone who has ever seen the vintage footage of P-Funk live from the 70's knows, that happens to be one of the best live shows of all time. OF ALL TIME. I'm not even joking. Here's Shider in his prime, singing lead vocal on One Nation Under a Groove.

Now, sadly, the classic period frontline vocal/guitar section (Shider and Glen Goins) is gone. At least we still have some great footage and live recordings from the period - you can hear both Shider and Goins on backing vocal duties on this stunning jam of Undisco Kidd from 1976. They screamed, they'd shout, they really did turn that sucker out.

From the opening of the same show, here's Garry singing on "Cosmic Slop". The dude on lead guitar in the huuuge hat is the also-sadly-deceased Eddie Hazel, and the first dude to sing is Fuzzy Haskins (thankfully still alive). This whole show is available to buy on DVD. I've probably mentioned it before, but it really is worth it, the whole soundtrack has been remastered in Dolby surround.

And finally a more recent clip, from whenever it was they did the cash-in second Woodstock festival in the late Nineties. Oh wait, '99. Garry's not featured so heavily in this one, but he's still there rocking. You can tell it's him cos, well, he's wearing a nappy. He became known as "Daiper Man" (to the extent where he sued the drummer from No Doubt for also wearing a nappy on stage). That shows just how fucking cool the guys was.

Garry "Daiper Man" Shider, you will be missed - Funk In Peace!

Chrome Hoof @ Sub Club

So, Chrome Hoof played at the Sub Club on Sunday night, as part of the new post-Optimo club night called "Hung Up".

They rocked, they progged, they disco-ed, they even doomed - in short it was fucking awesome! I haven't seen a band who have combined so many disparate genres and made it really work in a loooong time. There was eight of them on a small stage dressed in matching silver spangly capes (except for the singer Lola who was uber-glam, and the drummer Milo who had his own special black getup) - the usual drums/bass/guitar/keys scenario but with added electric violin, saxophone and trumpet. It shouldn't be a surprise as to how good they are though - they count among the band members of other groups like reknowned house act Spektrum, doom legends Cathedral and Dissident faves Binary Chaffinch.

They have just dropped their new album Crush Depth and it comes highly recommended. They manage to pull off the trick of being musically all over the shop but tied together with unique focus and vision. Being that the band was formed in 2000 by brothers Leo and Milo Smee, also the rhythm section, that would make sense. There's definitely a whiff of Goblin to the proceeding, which makes even more sense and endears them to me even more. So, if you have a chance to see this band live this summer, do it, and if not (or even if so) go out and get Crush Depth RIGHT THIS BLOODY MINUTE!!

Ben Sims House Mix on Essex Rascals

If you, like me, know Ben Sims for late 90s looped up banging techno then the Essex Rascals show that he does on www.deepfrequency.com with Tony Anderson, Mark Broom and Paul Mac may not be what you would expect.

The show covers house, hip-hop, funk, soul, techno and the latest show has an absolute banger of a house mix from Mr Sims himself. You can listen to it here and the archives are well worth checking out too! It's also worth having a nose at the Essex Rascals site for information on them.
