Telford Picks a Holy Beast

Telford, one of our favourite house DJs, has selected a track to get you in the mood ahead of this weekend's Subculture Residents party.
It's a thick slice of beauty, with a ghostly vocal and a synthetic low end just begging to be heard on a system that can take it.  The track is by Kate Wax, and the remix is by James Holden.

Telford is joined at Sub Club by Junior, Esa, and of course Harri and Dom.  Going by previous resident events, this Saturday on Jamaica Street should be a belter.

Get more Telford here on SoundCloud, or over at Subcity's 'Slave To The Rhythm' radio show. If you want to hear the rest of the subculture teaser tracks, get to the Sub Club facebook.

Levon Vincent / Jus-Ed @ Numbers

Repeating guests and billings is too often a sign of a club night getting comfortable and rich - Yes, Pressure, we're talking to you here. However, undoubtedly one of Numbers' best line-ups of last year was the double header of Levon Vincent and Jus-Ed, who utterly wrecked it, despite opening for techno godhead Robert Hood. So, to compensate for the short sets last time round, Numbers return both DJs to the subby, and turn them lose for the entire night. Banging.

Friday 4th Febuary
Sub Club, Glasgow
11pm till 3am

£10 (Advance tickets available from Nmbrs.net and Resident Advisor)

Frankly, any excuse to remind our readers of these two monsters.

Ravers take to street for illegal party

Co-Op Rave on Midland Street, between Arches and Macsorleys

From the Evening Times:

Hundreds of clubbers held a giant rave party in a city street over the weekend.
Midland Street became a dance floor in the early hours of Saturday morning when clubbers poured out of The Arches at 3am to be greeted by a Volkswagen Golf with speakers in the boot.
It pulled up and started blasting out music, blocking the street for one and a half hours.
The atmosphere was “frenetic”, according to one witness.
Despite the fact the city centre is busy with police on weekends, not a single officer saw the crowd or reported it.
Although the event was described as “good natured” and no complaints were made, a leading Glasgow MSP called for a police investigation.
Club promoter Chet Capkiner, 25, who organised the party, said: “We had a great time.

Co-Op Club @ Sub Club

Co-op Club is a new weekly club which lauches tonight at the Sub Club. It's a collaborative effort between Glasgow based promoters Dirty Noise, Mount Heart Attack and Orderly Disorder and comes with the student-friendly entry price of £2/3. The guys have posted a wee "war" themed minimix to promo Co-Op, and it's definitely worth a listen:

Skudge on Animal Farm

Animal Farm, as anyone in Glasgow who love's the techno'll know, throw excellent parties.
The trio have been on it since we came across them in Soundhaus, and are currently rocking the Sublclub, at least in part down to an unassailable taste in guests. Fortunately for anyone outwith that dear green place, they also represent once a week on their Subcity show.
I'm listening to the most recent episode, featuring a full hour of animal on animal action from Quail and Turtle and a live set from scandinavian production unit, Skudge.

Shit hot to tidy the house to, I can  only imagine what this would sound like over the subby system.

Skudge on Animal Farm

Tune in next week when they'll be announcing their guest for the sixth birthday. If past form is any guide to future, shit will bang.

Jeff Mills @ Sub Club, Fri 23rd July

I was going to post about this year's boring Mercury prize shortlist, but it's just so fucking boring that instead I will say: Jeff Mills is playing a set at the Sub Club this Friday. Yes, THAT Jeff Mills is playing in THAT Sub Club - it's going to be very busy, very hot and very banging, and all to celebrate the launch of the new Rubadub website, which is an exciting event in itself. In fact, it looks like the perfect conditions for it to go "right off", as the kids are known to say.

They have already sold out the advance 400 tickets, but today they have put an additional 200 out for sale in the Rubadub shop (35 Howard St, Glasgow). So get there quick if you want to get one, as no doubt these will shift like hot cakes filled with smack. And money. Here's what the Subbie have to say:

"On the 23rd Of July Jeff Mills will be playing a rare set in the intimate confines of the Sub Club to celebrate the launch for the all new Rubadub website designed by Remote Location.

He'll be playing a 3 hour set in what promises to be a very special night.
"

**********EDIT************

Oops, got my info mixed up there, turns out the 200 tickets will be on sale ON THE DOOR and NOT FROM THE SHOP. So get your queuing shoes on!!

Chrome Hoof @ Sub Club

So, Chrome Hoof played at the Sub Club on Sunday night, as part of the new post-Optimo club night called "Hung Up".

They rocked, they progged, they disco-ed, they even doomed - in short it was fucking awesome! I haven't seen a band who have combined so many disparate genres and made it really work in a loooong time. There was eight of them on a small stage dressed in matching silver spangly capes (except for the singer Lola who was uber-glam, and the drummer Milo who had his own special black getup) - the usual drums/bass/guitar/keys scenario but with added electric violin, saxophone and trumpet. It shouldn't be a surprise as to how good they are though - they count among the band members of other groups like reknowned house act Spektrum, doom legends Cathedral and Dissident faves Binary Chaffinch.

They have just dropped their new album Crush Depth and it comes highly recommended. They manage to pull off the trick of being musically all over the shop but tied together with unique focus and vision. Being that the band was formed in 2000 by brothers Leo and Milo Smee, also the rhythm section, that would make sense. There's definitely a whiff of Goblin to the proceeding, which makes even more sense and endears them to me even more. So, if you have a chance to see this band live this summer, do it, and if not (or even if so) go out and get Crush Depth RIGHT THIS BLOODY MINUTE!!

Lady Afro Does Not Go Gentle

Kinky Afro was always one of the best nights in Glasgow. In it's heyday, it was a clusterfuck of awesomeness, with in house drummers, a playlist that just didn't exist and great vibes. Even recently they were booking pop acts one month and rhythm kings the next, never really looking too much to anyone else's lineup for inspiration.

Last night they had Mathew Herbert, back on the decks after his self-imposed exile, probably a one-off. He blew the shit out of the crowd as you'd expect, and most folks danced all the way til the 5am finish.

It was a shame to see it leave, but what a way to go.

Lady Afro, we salute you.

(you can listen to the mix they did for the birthday/funeral over on Radio Magnetic, the home of our own Little Rock show)
