"Who will bring redemption but the jesters?" - The Talmud
Noise-spewing clown of Revelation, Harlequinade, has committed fragments of his ever-evolving dark art to the printed page, collecting poems, fragments of scripts, lyrics and rants in a neat little volume released by Red Squirrel Press later this month. Rapper, slam poet, performance artist and film-maker, Harlequinade's various methods of delivery merge and collapse, challenging perceptions of art, music and literature. Committed to paper are various poems, extracts, scripts, scribblings and horrorscapes depicting a dark and surreal vision of the world.
The launch party takes place at the Jazz Bar in Edinburgh, from 7pm on the 10th March (free entry), and also sees the launch of a full-length collection from Jenny Lindsay, also on Red Squirrel. Lindsay and Harlequinade will both be performing readings.
Baba Brinkmann Live Tonight! On the other side of the country, or 40 minutes train journey, depending how you look at it. I'd forgotten how good this guy is. Having made his name at the Edinburgh festival with The Rap Canterbury Tales, he's gone on to found a record label, tour incessantly, and create rap versions of Gilgamesh, Beowulf, and most recently, The Origin of the Species. Tonight, he plays live in Henry's Bar Cellar, 8pm-1am. A mere £4/5, with support from Chemical Poets and Dizraeli.
Apocalyptic Goblin of Doom ™ Harlequinade (Church of When the Shit Hits the Fan / Neverzone) just noised us up about some free music courtesy of INeedMusik.com - remixes of Edinburgh artist Sacre Noir, whose debut album is available through Savage Records / Dejine Rec now. With hints of 90's trip-hop and breakbeat, alt-pop and gothic melodies, it's a unique and dark combination. The remix EP features the best of Edinburgh's hip/trip-hop scene and can be found over here.
It's our 3rd birthday here at Little Rock, so to celebrate we have a few freebies coming your way over the next week. First up is the FUCKNO EP - featuring new tracks by 7 of the acts featured on the FUCKNO LP (still available to download). In keeping with the spirit of NORAVE the tracks veer from post-crunk to delicate ambient, from noise-hop to torch song to a bizarre afro-rock-house jam to end it all. All tracks are at 320Mb and the whole thing clocks in at 49 minutes. Total artronica. Go get:
"We thought it would be funny to blend free-improv noise and hip-hop. Clearly, it is. ...and it has remained funny for the past 2 years that we have been gigging."
Ladies and Gentlemen, applause if you please for Sileni. Squalling noisecore and non-rhythmic structures collide with Lovecraftian intonation, darkly poetic rhymes and twisted humour. Once reviewed as "Sounds like an anvil in a washing machine with a wrestler trying to talk loudly over the noise – all scraping, clunking beats and cyclical skewed and skronky melodies repeated until you feel sick", Thunder / Sun - Live is post-apocalyptic music for the dead generations buried in the rubble. Awesome. Vocalist Harlequinade is one of the main forces behind Black Lantern Music, as well as running Neverzone promotions and co-creating the disturbing film vignette Swirlhead. Their album Riders on The Conquering Worm is available as a free download from Black Lantern, as is Harlequinade's solo effort Nihilonymous Germscapes.
