Soundcloud Meetup - Glasgow 2011 [FULL VERSION] from GlasgowMeetup on Vimeo.
Apparently, it's been available for a good wee while now, but due to the impossible-to-locate Voltergeist, I've not yet seen the full thing. So, here's the 20 minute edit of the Glasgow Soundcloud meet-up event, including lots of panel chat from Paul Reset, Muslim Alim and Texture.

Pumajaw - Mask

Pumajaw, ex-Fence Collective folk-not-folksters physically release their new single Mask on the 25th of April, but are kindly giving it away as a free download from their website. Taking in aspects of psychedelics, electronica, offbeat folk and ambient, the two-piece layer up loops of guitars, concertina, synths and more to create a deep and powerful type of post-electronica that feels like the Beta Band on some hefty downers.
Pumajaw play King Tuts on the 25th of April, and Doune the Rabbit Hole festival in June. I'll be at the latter.

Hetherington Building Broken Down
This seems pretty fucking crazy - the Hetherington building's occupation has come to a fairly abrupt end following police intervention this afternoon. The Hetherington has been occupied for the past two months as part of an ongoing protest against the cuts to student funding and the hike in tuition fees. I've been right next to the university all day and there's been helicopters circling, hi-vis everywhere and a seriously heavy handed turfing-out of the remaining students in the building. The university's line is that the protest is interfering with their plans for refurbing the building and making it an academic resource. Considering that in my time at uni, Muir Russell kicked a number of departments out of the main building and into shitty pre-fab premises so that he could cram as many paying functions into the main building at as high a price as possible, I'm not exactly excited to see the uni reclaiming it's property.
On the other hand, a few contacts tell me that previous student protests, including the recent demonstration in the quadrangle, have gone a bit far in the aggression stakes, breaking into offices and going all-out to embarrass the administration. The worst excesses being attempts to occupy the principal's office that have achieved little except making the protesters look like a gang of hooligans. However, what I've seen today seems utterly excessive, and is best described as a load of ludicrous showboating on behalf of an institution thats rapidly losing their shit.
I have no camera with me, so these photos from the BBC's rolling news coverage will have to suffice.
Fucking idiotic.

Felix Kubin
I'm sure that most people will already know of Felix Kubin, but following the recent intrerview in Wire, I've gone on a bit of a bender over his work, and felt it was worth sharing some of this unique genius. Half dadaistic performance art, half reductionist electro-pop, with a dose of character re-invention thrown in make for a larger-than-life artist who produces an utterly unique mix of videos, music and artwork; Imagine Marilyn Manson if he was raised on a diet of Gagarin, Kraftwerk and Daphne Oram instead of overdosing on sex, guns and Monroe.
Like all dadaistic work, Kubin's scattershot in his targets - some days he's evoking the retrograde technology of the cold war, exploring radio transmissions, dressing like Ernst Stavro Blofeld and giving praise to Gagarin, others he's playing Bowie and writing offbeat pop songs from the mouth of an alien. It's hard to tell if the fully-immersed characters he's created (and given interviews as) are intended a keen statement on the nature of celebrity, a la David Byrne, or simply Kubin childishly indulging his own fantasies. Either way, his art (most of which can be got from Itunes / amazon etc) forms a unique catalogue that I've been enjoying lately. A good starting point is the Matki Wandalki album, which contains this brilliantly bleepy cover of a well known classic.
There's also plenty of his video collaborations on youtube, including this Willie Wonka meets Cecille B. Demille one for Hotel Supernova... Brilliant.

Sandwell District - Feed Forward
Sandwell District - Feed Forward (Sandwell District)Despite being one of the biggest things to happen to techno for the past couple of years, Sandwell District's album has been strangely absent from the racks of our local record stores, was only pre-orderable on boomkat when I had no money, and is fetching around 80 bucks on discogs. However, a little bit of ingenuity (find a mate with a copy, persuade him to loan it), and a fair heft of work have put me in possession of the audio from this monstrosity. Admittedly, I'm lacking the gorgeous artwork from Silent Servant, and don't have the joy of holding a double-pack album and a 7" single in my sweaty little palms, but fucking hell, is this a beast of a package. Opening with the apocalyptic three-parter Immolaire, Sandwell drag the listener through a powerful mixture of pure percussion and beatless spaces, before giving us more melodic techno from Speed + Sound (a rework of Function's track from Sampler #1), robo-industrial battery from Grey Cut Out, and dried out, barren wastelands on both sides of the 7". As we've come to expect from Sandwell, it's hard-as-nails; full of mechanical crunch, jacking beats and ominous distortion in the high-end. This isn't the Millsian school of "Hit them hard, hit them fast" brutality though; synth swathes and distressed strings are offered up to tantalise the listener, but never break through with enough force, lurking behind walls of static and groaning bass to generate a crushingly empty feel. Even the Surgeon-esque Hunting Lodge, in all it's jacking glory, contains a definite sense of groove and rhythm that holds back from bludgeoning you to death.
It's a Berghain record, steeped in Berlin's technoid folklore and designed to be played in clubs where no-one really cares what day it is anymore, but there's a greater depth of influence showcased here, with nods to the industrial and post-punk sounds of Birmingham and Sheffield (Silent Servant's a big fan...), touches of Detroit's widescreen sensibilities and the type of crushing heaviness that belongs on a Khanate or Tribes of Neurot record. Sandwell make all these their own though, and the acid bassline that emerges through Hunting Lodge is pure Chicago; brilliantly bastardised and reworked as their own.
Definitely one of the most powerful techno albums I've heard in a long time; Sandwell have delivered their most complete manifesto to date and thrown down one hell of a challenge to the world. Feed Forward will remain important for years, though a repress seems unlikely, and a digital release is categorically not going to happen. I'll be treasuring this one.

Ricardo Villalobos / Los Updates / Anthony Collins - Joli Chat EP
Ricardo Villalobos / Los Updates / Anthony Collins - Joli Chat EP - Nice Cat Records (out 03/04)Back before Villalobos became a byword for ceiling-punching, deck-wrecking minimalism (witness the insane response to Sensu booking him for the subby lately), he was fairly well known for sculpting spectral, reductionist techno and house. Reuniting with previous collaborators Los Updates and Anthony Collins for the Joli Chat EP, Villalobos returns to weaving darkly minimal soundscapes full of dried out and disquieting percussion. On the A-side, I Throw Water into the Lake rolls along on slinky percussion and a looping vocal that slides and drips through filter patterns, occasionally swallowing itself in a mess of repeats. Channeling the kind of funky (small f) grooves that Villalobos imbued his earliest works with, it's definitely a dancefloor mover, but at 12 minutes long, manages to retain the same kind of exploratory, strung-out vibe that marked his 30minute excursions for Perlon, or the faintly ludicrous Blood on My Hands remix. With a rattly, loose snare pattern, Water contains more than a few nods to South American folk music, offset by the mechanical-sounding redux sweep cutting through the background, and the big techy chord working its way to the forefront about six minutes in. The B-side, I Miss You So Much similarly draws on elements of folk music, but pushes them through an intense refining process, reducing full-flavoured and rugged riffs to the bare bones; the vocal disappears to the point of nothing before returning over the course of one four minute section. Like the micro-house of ~scape or Sahko, this is very much love-hate music, but it's essential groove and rich sounds ensure that Joli Chat is more than just experiments in reductionism.
New Radio - Presenting Bigfoot's Tea Party

Ahead of their St. Patrick's Sub Club meltdown with the vary talented Onur Ozer, Bigfoot’s Tea Party drop a cheeky wee mix for the Little Rock boys on RM.
Bigfoot’s Tea Party have been throwing parties in Glasgow for the past couple of years, bringing together the best in techno, house, minimal and pure jacking beats.
Made up of a rotating cast of members, including international DJs Simon Stokes and Hans Boufmyre (head of Sleaze Records), they’ve brought the likes of Edu Imbernon, Tim Xavier, Hermanez and Mr. Copy to venues across Glasgow; coupling every event with visual performances, they’ve built a reputation for unique live experiences.
Friday 18 March sees them hitting the big time with a shot at Glasgow’s most important venue, the Sub Club. Alongside the usual melange of visuals and beats, they’re bringing Onur Ozer to spin his unique blend take on minimal house. Should be awesome – check out his Watergate mix.

Attack The Block @ SXSW

Joe Cornish's debut feature Attack The Block had its world premiere at South By Southwest yesterday, and the reviews coming in so far are pretty good. It looks ace - a gang of inner city London yoof have to defend their tower block from an invading alien force. Coming from the man who is partly responsible for Quizzlestick, Toytanic, The Footie Song and much more, this promises to be good. No word yet as to when it will be released over here, but we'll keep you informed.

Save Otago Lane
From the Save Otago Lane group email:
"Today is the last opportunity we have to make a posted objection to the development proposals on Otago Lane. There are 349 responses registered by the council though they say there may be a backlog. The more we can send them, the stronger the message of public support. We have to get more in.
Please, if you have time, write a letter and send it today to Development and Regeneration Services, 229 George Street, Glasgow, G1 1QU or send an email to planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk (TODAY).
Make sure your letter has material considerations, meaning reasons for objection that the council will take into consideration:
- traffic generation (there has been no provision for parking, research into traffic impact and no alternative scheme proposed);
- destruction of the Wild Life Corridor (the blocks planned for the river bank will mean the removal of a large area of the officially recognised Wildlife corridor);
-Residential Principle 6 (RES 6) which specifically demands that large buildings cannot be built on back lanes with muse cottages. Proposals are for buildings rising to 6-8 storeys
- Out of keeping with Glasgow West Conservation Area in style and in use of materials and scale
- Over Development - there will be potentially 200 people moving into the lane.
There are many more points which can be made - check out the website for more info.
Thanks for your support

Gakken vs Sepultura
I've been considering getting a Gakken SX150 to play with, maybe circuit bend, so naturally I did some google-based research. I found some cool videos of folk hacking them and using them in various ways, but when I found this I had to share:
I especially love the guitar body he's built for it.
The rest of the videos by The Clap are worth a wander through as well.

Joy O - Jels / Wade In
Joy O - Jels / Wade In (Hot Flush) - 10/03Definitely the most ballsy Joy Orbison record to date; despite the glossed-to-fuck synths he's made his trademark, the 303 bassline rubber-ducking it's way through Jels is far harder than anything from his previous house / r'n'b / step variants, and combined with beefy kicks and big booming claps, makes for a seriously jacking peice of work. Of course, there's the obligatory vocal dropped into the mix - a detuned, mournful cry of "torn" cutting through, but this one's played a lot straighter than other Orbison tracks, basing itself around classic house grooves. Wade In is similarly grounded in proper house, building from solid 303 percussion and a definite kick-clap structure, but shuffling the rimshots and cowbells to weirdly accentuated positions. The filtering, loopy vox is still garagey as fuck, as is the surreally strung-out breakdown, but the piano riff worming it's way through the drop is pure Chi-town stuff. Without retreating into simplistic formulae and done-to-death styles, UK bass music is circling back a degree or so, dragging with it all the new flavours and styles acquired along the way; the artist formally known as Orbison might just turn it all into house music again....
"Them pigeonholes were never nothing to hold me"
Vivek - Pulse / Roots (Deep Medi)
Vivek - Pulse / Roots (Deep Medi) - buy on boomkatProper hefty steppers from Mala's Deep Medi music that come on like MRK1's first forays into dubstep. Crawling from a mess of dial tones, bleeps and distorted voices, Pulse kicks in with an armour-plated combination of warping bass and massive snare smashes that's almost distressingly claustrophobic. Admittedly, this kind of lead-heavy 'step has waned in popularity following dubstep's rise to mainstream ubiquity, but Vivek manages to avoid lapsing into predictability by channeling a dank, industrial vibe and conjouring up a paranoid landscape of tapped phones and whispered secrets. It could be a topical jibe at rat bastard Coulson and the 'Screws mob, or an homage to Coppola's classic The Conversation, either way, it's a brilliantly menacing combination. Roots is, unsuprisingly, a warmer and brighter number, a sweaty mix of writhing bass, half-timed tribalisms and distant woodwind trills. Nowhere near as tooth-rattlingly heavy as the A-side, Roots is heavier on the dub, with a rich, tribal sensibility, filtered through the grit and grime of the urban UK.
It's not the greatest piece of wax I've picked up, but as club tracks go, it's rich, powerful and effective. I have a sneaky suspicion Roots goes brilliantly into Mala's recent Moritz Von Oswald Trio reshape... gonna go try that now.

Fuck Rupert Murdoch

From 38 Degrees:
"Jeremy Hunt has just announced he wants to give Murdoch's BSkyB takeover the go-ahead. It's bad news, but it's not over yet. We need to make sure that today, the day of the announcement, our MPs are feeling the heat.
We now have three weeks to challenge the deal and stand up for our democracy. We need to get MPs speaking out right now, and telling Jeremy Hunt that it's obvious that this deal is whitewash. So please email your MP today and ask them to speak out publicly and write to Jeremy Hunt.
Click here to send your MP a quick email:

Jeremy Hunt and Murdoch now want us to believe this is a done deal. But there's still an outside chance we can stop the takeover. We need MPs to speak out - telling the media, and Jeremy Hunt, that the public don't buy this deal. That means MPs need to hear from all of us, and fast.
The Murdoch empire has been forced, partly thanks to our campaign, to give a little ground. They’ve said Sky News won’t be totally controlled by Murdoch. But he’ll still have directors on the board and control the cashflow. Sky News will have to stay in Murdoch’s good books if it wants to keep going.
Murdoch made similar promises when he took over the Times. But these promises turned out to just be spin. This latest deal is just a whitewash. It still means Murdoch gets more control over our media. And that's bad news for our democracy.

John Foxx & Gary Numan Remix Competition

Cross-post from Dangerous Minds.
The London-based events company Back To The Future have a competition open until the end of the month to remix living synth legends Gary Numan and John Foxx. While the prizes for this competition are only really relevant to people living in the UK (free tickets to the Back To The Future concerts on April 1st and 2nd in Manchester and London, playback of the winning remixes at the concerts) I thought this would be worth sharing here for all the Foxx and Numan fans who might want to have a crack of the whip. From the press release:
This is the first time in their prolific careers that Gary Numan and John Foxx have decided to share the creative side of making music with fans. The competition involves entrants making the best remix of either 'Scanner' by Gary Numan or 'Shatterproof' by John Foxx & The Maths. The winner will get a pair of VIP passes to Back To The Phuture, plus signed copies of the latest Gary Numan album 'Jagged Edge' and John Foxx album 'Interplay'. The winning remixes will be played at Back To The Phuture (at the massive Troxy in London and Manchester Academy). Entries will be judged personally by Gary Numan and John Foxx and an endorsement from each will be given – not a bad boost to any up-and-coming producer’s career!

"The Noughties: WTF Just Happened?" on Weaponizer

So, the first part of my ongoing monthly series looking back at the music of the last decade has gone up on Weaponizer. As you may have guessed, the first year to be covered is 2000, when speed garage was coming to an end, disco-pop dominated the charts, and someone called PEaches dropped her first album.
There are going to be guest contributions to this series too along the way, with the first guest spot going to Weaponizer's own Bram Gleiben, who is weighing in with a two part look back at hip-hop from 2000-2010. He should have that ready for next Monday. In the meantime, you can start reading it here.
Aaron Carl - Wallshaker / Sven Weismann Remix
Aaron Carl - Wallshaker / Sven Weismann RemixRightly so, the tributes to the late great Aaron Carl keep coming, with the excellent Milions of Moments re-re-issuing Carl's 1997 classic Wallshaker, along with two reworks, and donating the profits to his family. I was never so into Aaron Carl as The Niallist, so discovering Carl's brilliant take on disco, techno and booty is both fascinating and saddening - Wallshaker is guaranteed anthem material, and no-one's going to make another. Riding on crisp analogue beats, with camp-as-fuck orgasmic moans and big house vocals floating in the top end, Wallshaker is as euphoric a house anthem as I'm Your Brother, Good Life or French Kiss, beasting along and breaking down gorgeously. One of the gayest records I've ever heard, I'm very happy to have this on wax.
The Sven Weismann rework is much more my thing, and whilst lacking the sheer hands-in-the-air euphoria that Carl draws from simple 303 patterns, is a rich slice of lazy, dub-techno action that fractures vocals, and places them in the far corners of the soundscape. It's not Weismann's best work (I reserve that for his awesome rework of Ramadanman's Humber), but it does lovely things with the raw ingredients, and manages to take Carl somewhere unique, whilst remaining reverential of the original.
Carls deeper rework, Midnight Dub, the flip side to MOM's original re-issue, takes up the B-side here and is the perfect counterpart to the original; a true dub version that lazily scatters the vocal segments and focuses more on the funk and groove at the heart of the track. Put together, the two versions showcase an exceptional talent that I'm only beginning to understand.
Rest in Peace.
