2012 favourites Tropic of Cancer - I Feel Nothing

As every magazine starts compiling the inevitable end of year lists and arguing over the best releases, best live acts, most influential singles etc, I realised I'd never given any time on the blog to the bloody excellent Tropic of Cancer, who I've really been digging this year. With releases on Downwards and a forthcoming long-player due on Blackest Ever Black, there's a strong technoid influence running through their work, with hints of Raime, Throbbing Gristle and Regis all apparent, despite the slower tempo and gnarlier sound palette. Tropic of Cancer's work finds the middle ground between the syrupy psychedelia of hynagogic pop and the bleached emptiness of Witch House, carefully nurturing the space at the edge of sound to create unsettlingly beautiful atmospherics around dark gothic pop songs.
For me, their releases were some of the best stuff of 2012, and appealed to both my love of electronica and techno, and my long-standing love of doom metal. Yeah, I said it, they're doom. Deal with it. Bandcamp here.

CUR$ES

A quick post about Glasgow synth trio CUR$ES, whose albums are all up for free download on their Bandcamp page. Three musicians, using a Prophet 08 synth, MIDI pads and a Yamaha drum pad station, the multi-instrumentalist band switch parts mid-song while playing live, creating a vibrant, musically capricious sound that evokes everything from Joker's purple-wow dubstep sounds to the ghost-garage of Burial or Ghostek, with detours through witch house, drag and classic synthpop. 

They're an absolutely incendiary live act, as was proved when we saw them deliver an outstanding live session in support of Com Truise at Captain's Rest last week. Radio Magnetic are proud to present the Shallow Rave podcast, bringing together members from Black Lantern Music, Little Rock Records (currently on hiatus) and a number of other projects. With a heavy focus on experimental and Net Audio releases, Shallow Rave covers everything from hip-hop and experimental music to dub and straight-up techno.
Their first for Radio Magnetic, and fourth experiment so far, this episode features a guest mix of stately dark electro and dream-pop from hip-hop witch house producer BLACK CEILING (Aural Sects / I Had An Accident / Black Lantern), and an extensive interview with Scottish hip-hop legend Loki who talks about his work with Volition, an organisation using rap to transform the lives of young Scottish people, upstaging Shakespeare and his experiences in the battle rap scene.

Wise Blood - Loud Mouths

Nikola Nezit - Beth EP (ODDOT)

Something new, strange and beautiful to see you into the new year. The new EP by Nikola Nezit on the fantastic ODDOT label (home to /PLEASE/, (((O))) and Shisa, among others) has complex melodic piano arrangements reminiscent of Angelo Badalmenti, exquisite synth patterns, live stringed instrumentation, and echoing snatches of found speech. Defying genre categorization and explanation, fusing organic and electronic, this is a beautiful collection of songs: dreamlike and cinematic.

Video Artist Cosmotropia de Xam (Mater Suspiria Vision)

Cosmotropia de Xam is the visual architect and director of the films which accompany the enchanted, spectral music of MATER SUSPIRIA VISION, a collective in which he plays a central role. He has also made films for several other experimental artists, including his own 'Videodrome Reality' project.

His films, some times incorporating performances from regular collaborator Carmen Incardine, are visual poetry - camera movement, costume, make-up, stills photography and editing techniques are all important in CDX's cinematic approach.

Having recently released a 1-hour film (also starring Incardine), entitled 'Inside The Clock Of The White Rabbit,' CDX has made some interesting choices in his work technologically, in this instance shooting on 8mm film. In this video (for MATER SUSPIRIA VISION feat. How I Quit Crack - Opera Infernale), footage from the 1 hr film is previewed, giving the viewer hints of what is in store - CDX lingers on surfaces which reflect and distort his subject, filming Incardine in the midst of natural beauty, looking fragile and otherworldly, yet also empowered and super-natural.

MSV are one of the artists widely credited with creating 'witch house.' Although witch house as a musical movement is often stereotyped as being clasutrophobic and dark in atmosphere, CDX's films for MSV are full of illuminatory and tonal shifts, the interplay between brightness and shade, between monochrome and vivid, natural colours. His videos bring out the natural, spiritual side of MSV, and manage to both compliment and contrast the sounds.

He is equally versed in collage and remix techniques, incorporating rediscovered and found footage into his video for fellow Phantasma Disques act PWIN ▲▲ TEAKS, overlaying various channels and textures in the mix of visual material, and timing it all exqusitely with the movement of the music. It is this ability to work with visual textures and approaches which sometimes overlay, at other times distort, but always make strange the camera's subject matter that make his films so hypnotic - this, and his feel for the movement and motion of music.

Given that he has experimented with longer films, live footage, and a huge variety of visual techniques, de Xam seems like someone to keep an eye on the years to come - it will be interesting to see where his experimental techniques lead him next, and a pleasure to see him choosing which stories to tell.

This was completely incorrect - they were in fact removed due to containing elements of nudity. Evil bass, layered synths, creeping industrial menace and a polished, professional finish - this jumps out the speakers and dissects the listener with gleaming scalpels of doomish noise. Absolutely unmissable stuff, offered up as a free split release between our fellow travellers Aural Sects and the mighty Raveyard collective. Conjuring the nightmarish visions of Shin'ya Tsukamoto, and nodding indirectly to the predatory melodies of John Carpenter scores, producer Aparition has delivered an instant classic... this is one for the darkhearts among you.
