Professor Elemental - This Is My Horse

I am beginning to think that perhaps Professor Elemental is becoming more and more unhinged (if such as thing is possible), but either way, here's him rapping about horses, in what's definitely one of the more interesting pieces of topical humour to come out of the whole "oh god, we've eaten named animals" crisis.

Loki - Omnilash

You need this in your lives.

We got a sneak preview of this in the studio a few months back, but here's the finished version. Lyrically dense and with a sickening flow, the instrumental just makes it even more sick.

Brain Activity

We like a bit of Blue Daisy on this blog.  His ear for massive noise-scapes lifts his music out of the trip hop genre and into something futuristic and comfortingly dystopian; like William Gibson doing yearn-core.

The new shit? Well, it turns out that shit's fuckin' awesome as well.

Follow him on twitter, where I found the above excerpts.

DâM Funk, trying something new

This just got posted on his twitter feed, and he's looking for feedback. And why not? I met him when I saw him play a while back for Optimo; it was great, he was lovely. If this is a sign of a new direction, I think the next time might even better.

Hope you're well, Mr F.

Blue Daisy @ FACT

Last night's crash out listen was a ghostly mixture of sounds brought to me by FACT magazine, and mixed by Blue Daisy. Perfectly suited to my mood, the only thing missing was a spliff the size of my arm.

Juggalos = Gang Threat

Brilliant.

It's getting spun out of proportion a little bit, but there is truth to the story that Insane Clown Posse fans, Juggalos, have been included in the F.B.I.'s annual Gang Threat Assesment. Rolling Stone has the story here.

I'm fairly certain that the ICP don't need a great deal of introduction, so to sum up briefly; sex-and-violence-spewing clown-masked rappers, who's love of Dark Carnival imagery, professional wrestling, high-sugar soda and extremely black humour makes them equally adored and reviled by the mainstream press, and beloved of teenage boys everywhere. Last year, they admitted to being devout Christians. Their fans call themselves Juggalos, and if you need any more information, just google a few images - it will tell you all you need to know.

And now their fanbase are classified as being responsible for gang-related activities in the states of Arizona, California, Pennsylvania and Utah. The thought of them in any way cohesing stoned teenagers into active gangs is about as daft as the whole Judas Priest 'suicide messages' fiasco. The only difference is that we're slightly less knee-jerk than we were in the 80s, and Rob Halford could actually sing. Hell, if anything, kids listening to ICP are less likely to get involved in gangs - they're far too busy hepping themselves up on Faygo, hitting mosh pits and scrawling rude slogans on their school books. ICP offer all the fun parts of childhood in one go, plus a few cluster F-Bombs along the way to make it edgier. For about six weeks in 2001, they were all I needed.

Special School - Wilbur & Orville (free download)

Special School - The Album

Brighton's finest, MC Elemental, busts out another album of completely ludicrious steampunk/ fantasy / pulp crime inflected hip-hop backed up with solid beats and a totally screwy sense of humour, this time teaming up with Jon Clark and DJ Maxwell under the Special Schools moniker. Its.... well, hard to properly describe. Essentially, if you think that any one narrative is instantly and constantly improved by the gratuitous addition of zombies, monkeys, insanely humongous giant mecha, doomsday devices, crumpets, jam, cigars, aliens, mustache wax, pseudo-history and references to really awful 80s action movies, this will probably keep you entertained for a good while.

You can buy the album for a mere £5 over at Elemental's homepage, or for those a little uncertain what they're getting into (who they? - Ed), you can download Wilbur and Orville from This Link to give you a taste of what to expect.

Lukid - Spitting Bile

Lukid - Spitting Bile (Glum Records, out now)

It's a rare joy, when writing about and analysing music on a near-constant basis, to come across something that causes you stop dead and say "I have no idea what the hell this thing is". Lukid's popped out a couple of these in his so-far-short career - his first 12" on Glum might, if you squinted and gave it the benefit of the doubt, look a bit like house, and his previous majestic efforts for Werk are best filed under "sort of instrumental hip-hop, with more bleep but also some Theo Parrish". So how then to discuss his second 12" for Glum, a four-tracker brimming with ideas and new styles?

Opening with My Teeth in Your Neck, there's shades of Madlib and Dr Octagon, but also a fair heft of wonky house that nods to Moodymann or Shake Shakir; a kick drum beats out a solid 4/4 at 120ish, whilst the hi-hats and claps shuffle about in the mix like a nervous tic. Pitched in some ungodly register, the lo-fi synth channels a bit of Manitoba/ Four Tet wonk, to further confuse the matter. It gets no easier to pigeonhole for the remainder, with Park it Low retreating into more recognisably broken structures a la Onandon, and Dragon Stout heading for 8-bit gameboy territory. Title track Spitting Bile is yet even more WTF?-inducing, building a shuffling breakbeat, throwing in a 4/4, then obliterating it all with a saw-edged synth just as it's starting to build to something, then working its way back down again.

More than just being 'wonky' or experimental, Luke Blair has managed to make something that just feels, well, wrong - the rhythms, key signatures, dynamics and arrangements all push the limits of accepted convention to make a weird geek of a record. And yet, it's somehow very right and very cool.
