Remember when Chuck D called rap music the black CNN?

"It’s easy to blame Hitler for killing 6 million Jews. He’s the figurehead. He was a megalomaniac, an iron fisted dictator and a wild anti-Semite. It’s harder to take a look, though, at the society in Germany that turned everyday human beings, like the people you see walking around in America, into raving nationalists capable of anything. It’s easy to blame Stalin for his purges and millions of lives he destroyed. There are even people in this country ignorant enough to say that it is the inherent evil of Socialism and Godlessness that causes these things. However, it’s harder to pin point the person that is responsible for the African slave trade that cost hundreds of million of lives. There is no one person responsible for covered up massacre of Armenians or the mass genocide of Native American Indigenous people on this side of the world. You cannot hold Europeans collectively responsible, but most certainly those who were “escaping religious persecution” are dwarfed (again) by the hundreds of millions of lives that were lost as a direct result of their migration/invasion.

Bin Laden may be the face of radical Islam, but he was not its only leader. His death leaves a vacuum, a place for others that may wish to find fame and at the same time satisfy their supposedly pious Muslim ego in “accepting their duty” to engage in a Jihad against someone who is occupying their country. This person who wishes to be a singular entity must remember, only a few of those have ever held true power.

Bin Laden was not a devil. He was a regular person who was created by his circumstance, and by his many supporters including this government, but had he been born in Florida he could have owned a business renting boats or cars or running a restaurant. In the end, he chose his own fate, but I believe the radicalization of Islam, brought about by colonialism and harnessed by the Cold War was a factor.

UNITE exhibition @ Collins Gallery

And speaking of Emma Shannon, there's only two days left for Glasgow punters to get down to the Collins Gallery (Strathclyde Uni campus, near Merchant City) to see her skills! The exhibition is called "Unite" and displays the ceramic, textile and sculpture work of 35 different Scottish-based artists. Emma does a neat line in woven pieces influenced by Brutalist architecture (above).

Emma's show is of particular interest to us because it is also joined by a very special installation soundtrack by our own Aleks Jurczyk, aka Line Idle. It's called "Brutal Britain: A Soundtrack" and it goes a little something like this:

Save Otago Lane

From the Save Otago Lane group email:

"Today is the last opportunity we have to make a posted objection to the development proposals on Otago Lane. There are 349 responses registered by the council though they say there may be a backlog. The more we can send them, the stronger the message of public support. We have to get more in.

Please, if you have time, write a letter and send it today to Development and Regeneration Services, 229 George Street, Glasgow, G1 1QU or send an email to planning.representations@drs.glasgow.gov.uk (TODAY).

Make sure your letter has material considerations, meaning reasons for objection that the council will take into consideration:
- traffic generation (there has been no provision for parking, research into traffic impact and no alternative scheme proposed);
- destruction of the Wild Life Corridor (the blocks planned for the river bank will mean the removal of a large area of the officially recognised Wildlife corridor);
-Residential Principle 6 (RES 6) which specifically demands that large buildings cannot be built on back lanes with muse cottages. Proposals are for buildings rising to 6-8 storeys
- Out of keeping with Glasgow West Conservation Area in style and in use of materials and scale
- Over Development - there will be potentially 200 people moving into the lane.

This weekend we also lost original Italo pioneer Casco, aka Salvatore Cusato. The name might not be familiar but the tunes will be. We were label mates for a while on Radius Records, and I interviewed Sal for Discopia. When I get the chance I will re-publish the interview.
