Today's recommended listening comes from Flying Saucepan Records, an Ayrshire-based archive label run by an old friend of Shallowrave. Designed to clear hard-drives, catalogue archives and provide an outlet for many projects that never saw the light of day, Flying Saucepan's first release proudly display their mid-90s heritage, channelling acid, rave and the Sheffield warehouse scene. Also rocking out the speakers is the first Panpod, a mix of influential and related projects that joins the dots between electro, industrial, rave and techno, and is really rather kinky.

Black Dog mixes

After listening to their new 12" repeatedly, I've been consuming more and more of the Black Dog, and I'm digging both these mixes for completely different reasons. One's the brilliantly deep darkwave/ IDM/ techno that they're renowned for producing, the other a collection of post-punk and British experimental that's a fascinating history lesson for those who weren't around to see it.

Four Tet - Fabric Live 59 (19/09, Fabric)

I've never been the biggest fan of Fabric's output as a whole; amongst the undoubted greats (Shackleton, John Peel, Jackmaster), there's a few that date badly (Nitin Sawhney), or really just don't do it for me (John Digweed, LTJ Bukem). Occasionally, they pop out the kind of mix that keeps you fascinated for weeks and totally redefines the idea of a 'mix'. Four Tet's approach to his Fabric mix isn't quite the magnificent slice of awesomeness that Shackleton's was, but it does manage to do away with certain conventions, and surprisingly accurately convey his uniquely weird approach to production and performance. Based around a framework of 90s 2-Step and Grime, Hebden has tracked down vinyl rarities, ripped digital versions from records and recorded found sounds from Fabric itself in an attempt to convey his sense of what a night out feels like, rather than merely blending tracks as anyone else would have been happy to do. It's a headfuck, and stands up as one of Fabric's more unique releases, taking in Burial's mournful Street Halo, C++'s hyperactive Angie's Fucked, compositions Four Tet created especially for the compilation, and crafting them into a surreal musical masterpeice. Definitely one of Fabric's more interesting releases.

Jackmaster - Fabric 57

The hypometer just burst....

The details of Jackmaster's Fabric mix have finally landed, and it's a seething clusterfuck of detroit electro, house, disco, dubstep and 80s screamers guaranteed to get absolutely caned in the upcoming months. I've only listened to the promo stream twice, but it really is everything you'd expect from the Numbers mainstay - whilst Shackleton's Fabric live mix was introspective head music, Jack turns in an unashamedly party-centric mix, cutting fast and furious through guaranteed movers like Inner City's Big Fun, Vamp's Outlander, and DJ Funk's Pussyride. Fabric's mixes have always been a good indicator of what's happening in the dance music world, and Jack's mix should come as no surprise following Numbers' rapidly rising popularity over the past couple of years. For all the hype and hipness surrounding Numbers, people seem to forget that the boy absolutely kills it in the booth - Fabric 57 is a damn fine mix that ought to solidify Jack's status as a major international player.

The launch party's on the 13th May, with Jack, Rustie, SBTRKT live and more, or for those not interested in schlepping to Farringdon for the night, you can find Jack playing pretty much every weekend in and about Glasgow. Get down.

Fabric 55 - Shackleton

After conquering the bass music scene and sending the critics mental over his Skull Disco and Woe to the Septic Heart labels, Shackleton's latest offering is, surprisingly, a mix for Fabric. The dichotomy between the big room superclub on the one hand, and the darkly minimalist, mesmeric producer on the other aside, this is still a bloody weird choice. Rather than picking and choosing from other contemporaries and presenting a detailed mix of modern music, Shackleton uses only his own tracks, and most of those are reinterpreted uniquely, which rather runs contrary to the concept of a 'mix' as we understand it. That said, this doesn't feel like an exercise in self-promotion (as some have accused Omar S or Ricardo Villalobos' previous Fabric mixes of being), but comes across as a fascinating insight into the mind of a prolific producer. Musically, it's everything you'd expect, dissecting and rearranging past tracks into brooding sub-bass, murky passages of ambience, and his trademark collision of African and Arabic percussion and syncopation. It's an intense trip.

Shackleton has always relied on samples to enhance the atmospheric nature of his music, and opener Come Up stitches together repetitions of "beginning to come up" with shamanic wailing plucked from some future dystopian tribescape, creating a taut balance between rational, medical sounds and the drugged-out labyrinth of the trip. Continuing the lysergic tone, the dense layers of Moon over Joseph's Burial warp and twist around each other, disorientating and fugging the brain, until a barely recognisable Hypno Angel seizes the momentum via a distressed, ominous wailing. It's a disquieting drop-in, and could as easily be a call to prayer, orgasmic cries, or tears of sadness amplified and distorted. Like Lynch's dream-logic, the multiple possibilities place the listener in a state of perpetual uncertainty and disquiet.

The voice of the rational world breaks through again on Negative Thoughts, with a seemingly far-off voice explaining how to exorcise negativity, before the swirling wall of sub-bass and shifting percussion washes the listener away into a new dreamscape. Continuing through Death is not Final, Deadman, and his new singles Man on a String I and II, Shackleton carries the listener through kabbalistic mysticism, future dysopias and scorched nuclear winters, before finally arriving at the potent Massacre as the climax of the disc. With it's readings from the Book of Revelation, sickening sub-bass and frenetic percussive rhythms, it's a fitting climax to a post-modernist epic; the declarations that "I am the first and the last, the alpha and omega" leaving the listener utterly stranded in the wasteland, before Stripped bubbles away in a mess of voices muttering binary code.

This is undoubtedly one of Fabric's most interesting mixes to date, combining an epic narrative with devastating tunes and dark machinations to create the kind of post-modern headfuck rarely found in dance music.

Former head of the pioneering Skull Disco label, and modern beat innovator Shackleton lays down some tracks for the Little Rock crew, in support of his forthcoming Fabric mix CD

It’s with great pleasure that we welcome the critically-acclaimed Shackleton to Radio Magnetic. Blending dubstep, minimalism, drone and percussive workouts, the limited 12″s on his Skull Disco platform re-invented bass music and modern production styles.

His work since the closure of Skull Disco (with the Soundbwoy’s Grave Get Desecrated by Vandals CD) has been equally impressive, with the release of an album on Perlon, extensive live and DJ dates and the launch of a new label Woe To The Septic Heart. His mix for Fabric drops next week.

Cottam - Cottam #4 Review

It's fair to say that we're big fans of Cottam, the mild-mannered Lancastrian who released 3 devastating 12"s over the course of 2009 and introduced the world to his unique blend of afrobeat, reggae and house. We were lucky enough to catch him playing the early slot before Seldom Felt and Jackmaster tore up the subclub, and his DJ set tied up all the elements of groove, melody and dub that are represented on record. This new 12", which hit the shops last Thursday, continues Cottam's winning streak and I'm pretty certain Molotov Disco's Kyriakov will be unable to shut up about it any time soon. The A-side bears all of Cottam's hallmarks, with snippets of obscure afrobeat tracks looping over Kuti-inspired percussion and a solid techno undercarriage. However, with a more house-friendly bpm (as high as 119) than past tracks and a big techy chord chopping up the rhythm, this is probably one of Cottam's most accessible tracks to date and has critics comparing it to early Carl Craig releases. It's going to be huge.
On the B-side, a slumberous techno beat gets injected with funkadelic grooves and snippets of soul vocals. Clocking in a 9+ minutes, it's all about evolving a groove, and throws bongos, shifting guitar loops and brooding bass into the mix. It's a tricky little number that challenges DJs to work for the big pay-off, but is an invaluable weapon if used correctly.

Yes, its that time of year again, when darkness spreads across the land and the midnight hour is close at hand, etc etc. Due to the venue we had hired going out of business, we have been forced to cancel this years Rock'n'Shock festivities, which is a shame, but there's lots of other options for Samhain revelling (personally I highly recommend the Cry Parrot Art School party with Gary War, Ben Butler & Ultimate Thrush, and the return of Optimo Espookio). To get you in the mood, here are some free spookilicious download-able mixes.

The first two are from our own Menergy gang. We made these mixes back in May to promote the Italo Horror Party, but they seem more relevant at this time of year.
